The Black Cats edged the Blues at home!
Sunderland took on Chelsea in a Matchday 10 fixture of the English Premier League 2026-27 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, November 8, 2026. A first-half penalty from Enzo Le Fée secured a 1-0 win for the hosts.
The Black Cats started the contest brightly, pressing Chelsea high up in their half of the pitch. The hosts took the lead in the 36th minute, with Enzo Le Fée converting from the spot after Levi Colwill fouled Brian Brobbey in the box.
That goal proved to be the winner, with the Black Cats holding on for a crucial victory at home.
Five things we learned from Sunderland vs Chelsea:
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
1. Xhaka’s departure a big blow for Sunderland

With just over three minutes on the clock, the hosts were handed a huge blow when influential captain Granit Xhaka went down off the ball, seemingly having pulled up a hamstring. The Swiss midfielder looked in severe discomfort, leaving Regis Le Bris with no option but to replace him with youngster Jules Ahoka.
2. Talbi impresses on first start
Regis Le Bris opted to make three changes from the 3-1 defeat to Coventry City, and one of those coming in was Chemsdine Talbi. The Moroccan winger had been virtually frozen out, having been left out of the UEFA Europa League squad. His only meaningful minutes have come in the EFL Cup.
Today, however, he was tasked with going against Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra down the right flank. His dangerous cross was hit straight at Pep Chavarria by Trai Hume. He also created a huge chance for Brian Brobbey minutes later.
3. High press works for the hosts
Sunderland entered the fixture sitting at the foot of the table. No one would have blamed them had they parked the bus and fought for a point. Instead, the Black Cats pressed high up the pitch from kick-off.
The Chelsea backline, one of the leakiest in the league, struggled to contain the pace of Talbi, Trai Hume, and Brobbey. Playing quick, route-one football, they attempted to catch the Blues defenders sleeping, which is what happened when Brobbey beat Chavarria and Colwill to win the first penalty.
4. Penalty calls go against the Blues
Chelsea would have felt unlucky to go to the break one goal down. The Blues had a massive penalty shout in the 24th minute when Cole Palmer was challenged by both Noah Sadiki and Luke O’Nien. The referee waved play on, with the call going to VAR.
Replays showed that the challenge happened just in front of the penalty line, giving reprieve to Sunderland.
The Black Cats then had a contentious penalty call go their way. Brian Brobbey raced away from Levi Colwill before going down in the box after being pulled back by the French defender. Amid Chelsea protests, referee Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot, which was converted by Enzo Le Fée.
5. Estevao fails to turn around contest

After his wonderful outing against Manchester United, many would have expected Estevao to start today’s match. Instead, Xabi Alonso decided otherwise. However, with the Blues trailing at half-time, the head coach brought the Brazilian on for the second half, replacing Marco Palestra.
During his short time on the pitch, he completed the most dribbles. More importantly, he tried to take on the defenders and make something happen. However, that was not good enough to secure a win for the Blues.
