A-Team achieved a historic World Cup knockout win.

Key takeaways from FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 32 match

5. Johan Manzambi set a terrific World Cup record

Johan Manzambi’s brilliant assist to Breel Embolo opened Switzerland’s scoring in their round of 32 game against Algeria. The youngster set up Embolo in the 10th minute of the game to put the Swiss ahead. By doing so, he set up a new record.

Manzambi, 20, is the youngest player to be involved in five goals in World Cup finals since extensive data gathering began in 1966 (3G, 2A). In fact, only one U21 player has done so this millennium: Thomas MĂźller in 2010.

4. Dan Ndoye scores his first-ever World Cup goal

Dan Ndoye celebrated his first FIFA World Cup goal during Switzerland’s Round of 32 match against Algeria. The Nottingham Forest winger scored only seconds into the second half, extending Switzerland’s advantage. His goal put the game well under their control.

For Ndoye, it was a watershed moment: his first World Cup goal on football’s grandest platform, followed by a celebration that fans will not forget anytime soon.

3. Algeria become sixth African team to be eliminated from 2026 World Cup

Algeria are officially knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing 2-0 to Switzerland in the Round of 32. The North African team became the sixth African nation to exit the competition during the knockout round.

Algeria’s championship journey ended in Vancouver. They were unable to withstand early pressure from the Swiss team. This caps a spectacular campaign for the Desert Foxes.

2. Breel Embolo is the first Swiss player to score multiple goals at two different World Cups

Breel Embolo has made history as the first Swiss player to bag multiple goals in two FIFA World Cup competitions. The forward maintained his constant tournament influence, with notable performances in both editions.

Embolo scored twice on the international stage in 2022. He did it again in 2026, highlighting his value to Switzerland in key events.

His accomplishment puts him in elite company in Swiss football history, with just Josef HĂźgi (6 goals) and Xherdan Shaqiri (5 goals) scoring more World Cup goals for the country.
