Can the Alpine Nation eye a win over the two-time AFCON champions to make it to the Round of 16?
BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, gears up to host the Round of 32 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where European giants Switzerland and two-time African champions Algeria lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.
Switzerland emerged as the table-topper of Group B. After a 1-1 draw against Qatar, Murat Yakin’s side went on to win games against Bosnia and hosts Canada. They are in excellent form, scoring seven goals across three games. They are the favourites to win the game, given their stunning performance in the group stages.
Algeria were off to a humiliating 3-0 start against world champions Argentina. But the Mediterranean country bounced back with a 2-1 win over debutants Jordan before sharing spoils with Ralf Rangnick’s Austria in the last game, which was a six-goal thriller in the Kansas City Stadium.
This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Switzerland’s offensive setup manage to beat the defensive backline of Algeria, or will the African outfit get the better of the hosts? We shall find that out soon.
5. Ricardo Rodríguez vs Riyad Mahrez

The Algerian legend was a breakout talent in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Twelve years later, the former Manchester City midfielder has captained his side to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. The world-class right winger, even at 35, has arguably one of the finest first touches in modern football.
Ricardo Rodriguez is a veteran, making his fourth World Cup appearance. The Real Betis full-back is coming after a brilliant spell in La Liga. This will be a legendary battle between two World Cup veterans on the flanks, and Rodriguez must deny Mahrez any space to cut inside.
4. Granit Xhaka vs Fares Chaibi
Another four-time campaigner in the FIFA World Cup 2026, Xhaka is a beast in the midfield who is coming after propelling Sunderland to a continental finish in the EPL. He is a world-class midfielder who will be keen to dictate the tempo of the game and bypass the press from the Algerian midfield.
Chaibi is almost a decade younger than Xhaka, and it won’t be easy for the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder to battle it out directly against the Swiss legend in the midfield. The Lyon-born midfielder will function as the high-intensity attacking spark, aiming to disrupt Xhaka’s rhythm.
3. Gregor Kobel vs Luca Zidane

The Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper is a top-notch shot-stopper who previously earned his spot in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season for the 2023-24 season. Kobel will look to completely dominate his six-yard box by cleanly catching all aerial balls to freeze Algeria’s attacking play.
Son of the legendary Zinedine Zidane, the Granada goalkeeper was off to a tough start against Argentina in the opening game when he failed to deny Messi’s hat-trick. He was benched in the last game against Austria, and Zidane is expected to return to the starting lineup for Algeria.
2. Djibril Sow vs Rayan Aït-Nouri
After playing his trade with Wolverhampton Wanderers, the 25-year-old fullback made a high-profile move to his new home at the Etihad with Manchester City. He started two games so far and was benched in the last game against Canada. He is a highly technical, modern and fluid attacking fullback.
Sow is a tireless, tactically sound, and robust box-to-box midfield engine who will be tasked to keep Ait Nouri quiet on the flanks. The Sevilla midfielder will try to deny Ait Nouri space to look up by initiating quick physical contact on the touchline.
1. Manuel Akanji vs Amine Gouiri
A world-class defender, Akanji rose to prominence after winning the treble with Manchester City and cemented his legacy as one of the finest defenders in European football. He is coming after spending a loan spell with Inter Milan, where he went on to win the Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
The Marseille striker has scored a goal so far in the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Jordan. Gouiri aims to win the duel by executing sudden movements to pull Akanji wide and get his name on the scoresheet against Switzerland in the next game.
