Rossocrociati eye their first quarterfinal appearance in FIFA World Cup after 72 years with win over Colombia

BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, gears up to host the Round of 16 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the European outfit Switzerland and South American giants Colombia lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

Rossocrociati are coming after a 2-0 win over Algeria in the Round of 32 fixture after strikes from Embolo and Nottingham lad Ndoye. After a 1-1 draw with Qatar in the opening game, they clinched back-to-back wins over Bosnia and hosts Canada to end up topping Group B with seven points.

Murat Yakin, who has been at the helm of Swiss football for over half a decade now, would be keen to etch his name in golden letters. The European outfit are just a win away from qualifying for the quarter-finals for the first time since they last achieved this feat in 1954.

La Tricolour have arguably been one of the most dominant teams in the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far. They went on to finish the group stage unbeaten and atop Group K ahead of Portugal, Uzbekistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Given their current form, they are the least preferred opponent for any team.

Colombia are six spots higher than Switzerland, and they eye a second quarter-final appearance after 2014. Néstor Lorenzo’s side have conceded just one goal in the tournament so far and are coming off a narrow 1-0 win over Ghana in the Round of 32.

The winner of this game will lock horns with either Egypt or Argentina in the quarterfinals fixture.

The Round of 16 brings a fierce, knockout intensity where reputations matter less than 90 minutes of pure desire. The tournament enters a phase where absolute underdogs can stun football giants. Fans can expect a thrilling, high-stakes battle where any result is possible and either side has everything it takes to win.

Born in the Rhine Valley of northwestern Switzerland in Basel, captain Xhaka is playing his fourth World Cup for Switzerland. The Sunderland striker, who was initially linked to Chelsea, was part of Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side that went on to win the Bundesliga in the 2023-24 season.

He scored against Bosnia in the second game. He reads opposition defensive lines effortlessly. Xhaka will be up against an agile Colombian attack, boasting the deadly trio of Suarez, Rodriguez and Luis Diaz. He will be tasked with the responsibility of keeping the Colombian trio quiet during transitional plays.

James Rodriguez (Colombia)

The man who led Colombia to their first-ever quarter-finals at the FIFA World Cup back in 2014 is standing tall, wearing his team’s captain’s armband, leading the nation with pride after twelve years, as Colombia stands on the cusp of history, eyeing their second quarter-final appearance after 2014.

The two-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Rodriguez plays for Minnesota United in the MLS. He has been brilliant so far. However, he is yet to score so far and will be keen to find the back of the net in a crucial game against Switzerland next.
