India international goalkeeper Subrata Paul has been chosen to be conferred the prestigious Arjuna Award. The former Mohun Bagan and East Bengal keeper who was nicknamed ‘Spiderman’ for his acrobatic saves during the 2011 AFC Asian Cup has over 60 caps for his country and has also captained the national side on many occasions. “The Arjuna Award is one of the highest awards for sportspersons in our country. Over the years the best in their respective fields have been conferred with the award. A sportsperson never plays to get any award. But when your achievements get recognized, it is an added motivation to do better,” said a delighted Paul All India Football Federation President Praful Patel congratulated Paul on his achievement. “Subrata has been exceptional with his football all these years. He has been a flag bearer for long. Congratulations,” he said in his message. AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das spoke of how the shot-stopper had been an exemplary role-model and inspiration to youngsters. India boss Stephen Constantine also joined in with his wishes. “No one deserves the Arjuna Award more than Subrata. He has done so much for Indian football both on and off the field. I am very happy for him,” he said over the phone. Paul was also selected to be part of Danish Superliga team FC Vestsjælland in 2014, but did not make any first team appearances for the side. The custodian was part of Mumbai City FC in the first two editions of the Indian Super League (ISL) but will turn out for NorthEast United FC in the upcoming edition. He is the only footballer to make the 2016 list of awardees. He will also become the first footballer to be honoured with the prestigious accolade since Sunil Chhetri in 2011 and Deepak Mondal in 2010 when President Pranab Mukherjee gives it out on National Sports Day on August 29. Over the years Paul has been a winning member of the AFC Challenge Cup, three editions of the Nehru Cup and the 2016 SAFF Suzuki Cup.
