Thomas Tuchel England FIFA World Cup 2026

He has managed clubs such as PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich in the past!

The England national football team is now in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals. They are all set to go head-to-head against the defending champions, Argentina, in their next fixture. This contest will take place at the Atlanta Stadium on July 15 (BST).

After Thomas Tuchel announced the English squad for the mega competition this year, many people criticised the manager for missing out on names like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer, Harry Maguire and Phil Foden. As things stand, the Three Lions are doing really well on the world stage after the German tactician picked up a team of “specialists”.

After England’s 2-1 victory over Norway in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals, Tuchel mentioned that his side “got lucky”. He also mentioned that it was not a performance that he desired. The final-four fixture will be a tough outing for the squad.

It will now be interesting to see the strategies the 52-year-old manager uses against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

Thomas Tuchel has played for clubs like Stuttgarter Kickers and SSV Ulm before stepping foot in the world of coaching in football. He kicked off his managerial career with the VfB Stuttgart youth team in 2000. Tuchel then moved to the FC Augsburg Youth system in 2005.

His first senior managerial role was with FC Augsburg II in 2007. Working with youth players helped Thomas Tuchel gain valuable experience and develop his tactical ideas. His spell with Augsburg II lasted for only a season, but it was a big step for his career.

Tuchel’s breakthrough came after he took over the Bundesliga side Mainz 05 in 2009. He replaced Jürgen Klopp. Despite having limited financial resources, he transformed Mainz into a competitive German first-division side.

Thomas Tuchel eventually helped the club earn a qualification for European competition after they finished fifth in the league. After five years at Mainz 05, Tuchel moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2015. He was able to secure the first major trophy in his career.

BVB won the DFB-Pokal title during the 2016-17 season after taking down Eintracht Frankfurt in the final by 2-1. Thomas Tuchel introduced the club with a high-intensity and attacking approach to play. Ousmane Dembélé, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus were some important players competing under him.

In 2018, he moved to the Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and won two league titles with them. Tuchel also helped them reach the UEFA Champions League final in 2020, but failed to achieve glory against Bayern Munich. Thomas Tuchel also completed a domestic treble by winning Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue during the 2019-20 campaign.

Tuchel was appointed by the English Premier League club Chelsea in 2021. Here he was able to secure his first-ever UCL title after taking down Manchester City in the final by 1-0. Later, he also won the UEFA Super Cup and guided the Blues to their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup title in 2022.

Thomas Tuchel returned to Germany in 2023 and joined Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. His first season with the club was quite a dramatic one. He secured the league title on the final day of the season.

Under Tuchel, Bayern struggled to maintain their domestic dominance. They finished their season without a major trophy in more than a decade.

The German tactician was announced as the new head coach for the England national football team in October 2024. He officially began his role in January 2025 after replacing Gareth Southgate.

Thomas Tuchel became only the third foreign manager to take charge of the England men’s national team. The primary objective of his appointment was to win the FIFA World Cup 2026. Things are going as planned for the 52-year-old, and he might lead the Three Lions to their second-ever World Cup crown.
