Sunil Chhetri scored a sensational brace which guided India to a 0-2 victory over Bangladesh in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifying campaign on Monday. The match saw the skipper score his 73rd and 74th goal in his international career for India, two more than Lionel Messi’s 72 goals for Argentina. The 36-year-old is now second in the list of active goalscorers in international football.

Chhetri finds himself in exalted company and is only second to Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo. His feat also brings our attention to the most prolific active goalscorers in world football at the moment. Below is the list of the top 10 highest active international goalscorers right now:

10. Edin Dzeko – Bosnia-Herzegovina (59 goals)

Edin Dzeko represents Bosnia-Herzegovina in international football. The AS Roma forward has scored 59 goals for the national team in 114 caps. Furthermore, Dzeko is also the highest goalscorer in the history of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The 35-year-old still has a few years before he would consider retiring as a professional and could add more goals to his tally.

9. Romelu Lukaku – Belgium (62 goals)

Neymar is hailed as one of the most gifted players in world football. The Paris Saint-Germain attacker represents Brazil on the international stage. The 29-year-old has scored 67 goals in 106 games for the national team. He will also hope to add more goals to his tally during the upcoming Copa America 2021 in Brazil.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the leading active goalscorer in international football. The Portuguese is the only active player to score more than a century of goals. He has 106 strikes for Portugal in 176 appearances. Ronaldo will continue to lead the team in upcoming major tournaments despite heading towards the final stages of his career. The Portuguese is also the highest goal scorer in the history of the UEFA European Championships.
