Strikers found it difficult to score past them from 12 yards

The Premier League has been home to some of the finest goalkeepers in the sport. Many of them have played crucial roles in their team’s title success. Some keepers are known for their point-blank saves or their ball distribution. While others have risen to fame as great penalty stoppers. They have saved their clubs on countless occasions by saving the shot from 12 yards.

Strikers are fancied to convert all of the penalty kicks they take. But there are few goalkeepers who have the knack of guessing the right way. This helps them save the strike and keep the ball out of the net.

Let’s take a look at the top five goalkeepers with the most penalty saves in the Premier League.

5. Shay Given (10)

The Irish footballer is one of the best goalkeepers in the history of the Premier League. He played for a total of five clubs in the competition. His best spell came with Newcastle United. The Irishman made 354 league appearances for the Magpies.

Shay Given spent most of his career with lower-ranked Premier League teams. This saw him called into action on multiple occasions during any game. He was up to the task several times. Given faced 64 penalties in his career and saved 10 of them.

4. Ben Foster (10)

The Englishman made his Premier League debut with Manchester United. However, he didn’t play many games for them. His best spells came with West Brom and Watford in the league. The keeper has been one of the veterans of the competition.

Ben Foster also played for lower-ranked teams for most of his career. With relegation-level defences in front of him, the custodian was often the man to save his club. He showed his immense quality when it came to penalty kicks.  Foster has saved 10 penalties so far in the league from 54 faced.

3. Lukasz Fabianski (10)

Fabianski another keeper who has played for mid-table teams in the Premier League. The Pole began his journey in England with Arsenal. But game-time was limited at the Gunners. This saw him move to Swansea City first and later West Ham United.

Lukasz Fabianski has been the Hammers’ first choice for four seasons. He has pulled off some sensational saves. But this is frail in comparison to his penalty record. The Polish international has saved 10 of the 38 penalties he has faced.

The keeper has played a crucial role for West Ham this season. He has led their defensive line as the Hammers challenge for a Champions League spot.

2. Simon Mignolet (10)

The Belgian had a disappointing spell at Liverpool. But he was one of the best keepers in the league during his spell with Sundeland. He came up with sensational saves to help the club avoid relegation for many years.

This earned him a move to Liverpool. The keeper was widely criticised for his spell with the Reds. But despite that has an impeccable penalty record. Simon Mignolet faced 28 spot-kicks in the league, saving 10 of them.

1. Heurelho Gomes (11)

The Brazilian has the most penalty saves in the Premier League of any goalkeeper. He played for Tottenham Hotspur and Watford in the competition. Gomes had a brilliant record when it came to saving penalties. He has stopped 11 spot kicks after facing 35.

Heurelho Gomes was Tottenham’s first choice from 2008 to 2011 before being replaced by Hugo Lloris. He then joined Watford, helping them earn promotion in 2015. The Brazilian occupied his position between the sticks for Hornets before leaving in 2020.
