Some of the best players in the world have won the honour multiple times.
The Premier League is one of the most competitive leagues in the world, if not the most competitive. The first division of the English league system houses some of the best players from across the globe. The financial might of the clubs allows them to bring in the best of players, who attempt to bring success to their teams. As a result, performing well on a consistent basis in the league is a massive task. While making your mark in the competition as a player is noteworthy, doing it on a regular basis is a different feat altogether. The player who performs brilliantly across a particular month receives the prestigious Player of the Month (POTM) award.
Interestingly, 1994 was the first year when the award was given to Jurgen Klinsmann of Tottenham Hostspur. Bruno Fernandes became the first player to win the award four times in a calendar year in 2020.
Here are the top five players with most Player of the Month wins in the Premier League:
5. Cristiano Ronaldo - 5 times
Cristiano Ronaldo joined his former club Manchester United for a second stint in a landmark move during the 2021 summer transfer window. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has come back to the Premier League at 36-years-old. He didn’t take any time to settle and created an instant impact by scoring a brace on his second debut.
Ronaldo won the Player of the Month award for September 2021, which was his fifth overall. He has previously won it in November 2006, December 2006, January 2008 and March 2008. The former Real Madrid star has the chance to add more to his tally and move up in the rankings.
4. Robin van Persie - 5 times
Robin van Persie is regarded as one of the most clinical strikers to ever play in the Premier League. He played seven seasons for Arsenal, but won the Premier League only once, with Manchester United. The former Netherlands forward has now retired as a professional player. Van Persie managed to win the Player of the Month award five times as well.
He won the award in November 2005, October 2009, October 2011, December 2012 and April 2013. The 2012/13 campaign was particularly impressive for the player. Back then he won the POTM award twice, in addition to winning the league and Golden Boot with the Red Devils.
3. Harry Kane - 6 times
Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading goalscorer Harry Kane is the next player on the list. The Englishman has won the Player of the Month award six times in his career. The England captain is the seventh-highest goalscorer in Premier League history with 167 strikes.
Harry Kane has won the Player of the Month award in January 2015, February 2015, March 2016, February 2017, September 2017 and December 2017. The three-time Golden Boot winner has, however, never won the Premier League title, which continues to elude him.
2. Steven Gerrard - 6 times
Liverpool legend and former skipper Steven Gerrard has also won the Player of the Month award six times. He is the only midfielder in the list and tied with Kane as the leading Englishman in this regard. Gerrard won the honour back in March 2001, March 2003, December 2004, April 2006, April 2009, March 2014.
Gerrard is also the second-highest goalscoring Premier League midfielder with 121 strikes . He is behind compatriot Frank Lampard who has 177 goals to his name. Although Gerrard never won the league title with Liverpool, he did help the Reds win the UEFA Champions League in 2004/05.
1. Sergio Aguero - 7 times
Sergio Aguero is the leading player with the most number of Player of the Month awards. The former Manchester City striker has now joined FC Barcelona, after a heavily successful spell with the club.
