These clubs have dominated the English top flight
The Premier League has been home to some of the best clubs in the world. Several of them have had different phases of dominance in the competition. At the moment, Manchester City and Liverpool are competing for the title. However, Manchester United are the record champions. They have won the league 20 times. It is no surprise that the Red Devils have spent the most time at the top of the Premier League.
Manchester United’s dominance in the league has decreased in recent years. This has allowed the rest of the clubs to catch up with them. So, let’s have a look at the five teams to spend most days at the top of the Premier League table.
5. Liverpool – 832 days
The Reds are one of the most successful clubs in English football. They have won the joint-most trophies of any team from the country. This includes 19 first division titles. However, they have been unable to replicate that success in the Premier League.
Liverpool’s first PL title came in the 2019-20 season. This was their maiden triumph in England’s top flight. However, the Reds have come close on several occasions. They finished as runners-up on four other instances.
4. Arsenal – 988 days
The Gunners are in a re-building phase. Under Mikel Arteta, they are aiming to reach the summit of English football once again. Arsenal haven’t finished inside the top four for five consecutive seasons.
However, they are one of the most successful teams in the Premier League. They have won the competition three times, the fourth-highest on the all-time list.
Under Arsene Wenger, the Gunners were constant title challengers. The Frenchman led them to their maiden PL title in1997-98. This was repeated again in 2001-02 and 2003-04. They finished the season undefeated in the latter. Arsenal are the only English club to achieve that feat.
3. Manchester City – 1,004 Days
The Mancunian side have risen to dominance in recent years. They have been the standard-bearers of English football since the takeover in 2008. Their maiden Premier League title came in the 2011-12 season.
Manchester City have challenged for the title ever since then. They have won the league five times, the second-most. This includes back-to-back wins in 2018 and 2019. The Mancunians are the only team to end a season with 100 points.
2. Chelsea – 1,590 Days
The Blues have spent the second-most days at the top of the Premier League table. They have won the title five times. This includes consecutive triumphs in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. These wins came under Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese also led them to success in 2015 as well.
Chelsea’s last Premier League title success came in 2017 under Antonio Conte. They set a record for most wins (30) in a single season. However, the Blues have been unable to challenge for the title since then.
Under Thomas Tuchel they are looking like their old selves again, it seems to be a matter of time before Chelsea challenge for the title once again.
1. Manchester United – 2,362 Days
The Red Devils sit undisputed at the summit of the list. They have won the league title for a record 13 times. This has seen them spend a total of 2,362 days at the top of the Premier League table. However, most of that success came under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Since the Scotsman’s retirement in 2013, Manchester United have performed below the expected standards. Second place in 2018 and 2021 have been their best finishes. They have failed to qualify for the Champions League three times since then.
