Havertz leads the German scoring charts!

Kai Havertz scored the only goal for Arsenal in their 1-0 win against Liverpool on Sunday. This goal not only propelled the Gunners to the top of the table but also provided a personal milestone for the German star.

Havertz’s goal against Liverpool marked his 46th goal in the Premier League. As a result, he became the highest-scoring German player in the history of the English top flight. He overtook the record of Manchester City legend Ilkay Gündogan.

Other than Havertz and Gündogan, the Premier League has witnessed several free-scoring players from its European neighbours. Players like Mesut Özil lit up the league with their technical ability, and the likes of Lukas Podolski and Leroy Sané have served their clubs admirably.

Let’s look at the top five German goalscorers in the history of the Premier League.

Uwe Rösler, who had a wonderful four-year spell with Manchester City, also scored 29 goals in 103 matches. However, his compatriot, Jürgen Klinsmann, achieved this feat in just 56 matches.

Klinsmann spent 18 months with Tottenham Hotspur across two spells. He joined Spurs for the first time from Monaco in the 1994-95 season and scored on his debut against Sheffield Wednesday. He finished his first season in the English top flight with 20 goals.

After leaving for Bayern Munich and Sampdoria, Klinsmann rejoined Spurs ahead of the 1997-98 season on loan. He made just 15 appearances but scored an astonishing nine goals, saving the club from relegation.

4. Mesut Özil – 33 goals

Known more for his ability to set up goals than score them, Mesut Özil was a breath of fresh air when he joined Arsenal in 2013. In the eight seasons he spent with the Gunners, he became the focal point of attack for his team, registering 50 assists in the Premier League.

He was a potent goal threat as well, scoring 33 goals in 184 matches. He remains the 61st highest goalscorer in Arsenal’s history.

3. Pascal Groß – 34 goals

Brighton & Hove Albion have built up a reputation for striking gold in the transfer market, but few signings have been as successful as the £3 million move for Pascal Groß. The former Ingolstadt midfielder spent seven seasons with the English side, scoring 30 goals.

He earned a move to Borussia Dortmund, but returned to Brighton after just two years. So far, he has netted four goals for the Seagulls in 30 matches, taking his Premier League tally to 34 goals.

2. Ilkay Gündogan – 45 goals

Having netted just 10 league goals for Borussia Dortmund, few expected Ilkay Gündogan to become a goalscoring threat after moving to Manchester City in 2016. Yet, the German midfielder overcame early injury problems to become a player reborn under Pep Guardiola.

He scored an astonishing 44 goals in 188 league appearances, helping the club win a historic treble. After a short stint with Barcelona, he returned for a second spell with Manchester City, adding one goal to his tally in 33 appearances.

1. Kai Havertz – 46 goals

Kai Havertz took his time to get going after moving to Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen. Once earmarked as the next big talent coming from the Bundesliga, Havertz found it difficult to settle with the Blues. Despite this, he scored 19 goals in three seasons, including the winner in the UEFA Champions League final in 2021.

Arsenal signed him in 2023 for £65 million. Any scepticism about his finishing ability was quelled during the 2023-24 season, with Havertz scoring 13 league goals. In total, Havertz has netted 27 times in the league for the Gunners, taking his total Premier League tally to 46 goals.
