Top five goalscorers of UEFA Champions League 2021-22
Real Madrid won their 14th title by defeating Liverpool in the final.
Real Madrid stood tall after the conclusion of the latest season of the UEFA Champions League. It was the Spanish club’s record 14th Champions League title and their fifth in eight years. Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the final, a club that they also defeated in the last final that they played.
There are always goals galore in the Champions League as Europe’s best go head to head and the best strikers in the world come into action. Here is a look at the top five goalscorers of the UEFA Champions League 2021-22.
Christopher Nkunku - Seven goals
Christopher Nkunku makes it to the top five despite his team not making it past the group stages. The Frenchmen netted seven times for RB Leipzig in the group stages which included a hat-trick against Manchester City in RB Leipzig’s 6-3 loss.
Despite his heroics, Leipzig didn’t make it past the group stages as they finished third in a group that included Manchester City and Paris St. Germain.
Mohamed Salah - Eight goals
The Premier League’s top scorer of the season finds himself fourth on the Champions League list. Mohamed Salah netted eight times for Liverpool in the Champions League. Salah and co. fell one step short of the final prize as they lost in the final to Real Madrid.
The Egyptian scored most of his goals in the group stages, scoring only one in the knockout stages. The solitary goal in the knockout phase of the tournament came against Inter Milan in the round of 16.
Sebastian Haller - 11 goals
Sebastian Haller had a terrific season leading the line for Ajax. The Ajax striker scored 11 goals in eight matches. The 27-year-old did justice to Ajax’s free-flowing football. His highlight of the season was scoring four goals in Ajax’s 5-1 win away to Sporting Lisbon.
Ajax couldn’t make it past the Round of 16 as they lost to Benfica 2-3 on aggregate.
Robert Lewandowski - 13 goals
Robert Lewandowski is one of the best strikers in the world and he has shown that yet again this season. The striker scored 13 goals in 10 matches for Bayern Munich. Those 13 goals included two hat-tricks and a brace against FC Barcelona in the group stages.
Lewandowski was a definite contender for the top spot but his charge was cut short when Bayern Munich were shockingly knocked out by Villareal in the quarterfinals.
Karim Benzema - 15 goals
Karim Benzema was by far the best player in this season’s Champions League. The striker scored hat-tricks in the round of 16 and the quarter-final to help Real Madrid go through. The Frenchman then scored thrice in the two legs against Manchester City to help Real Madrid win 6-5 on aggregate.
Real Madrid eventually went on to win the trophy and Benzema had a huge role to play in Real Madrid’s success. He delivered at the most crucial of times helping Madrid out of some very tough situations.
