Local authorities have issued public health advisories, urging residents to avoid going outdoors. The National Guard even distributed face masks to the public. All this has led to concerns that the FIFA World Cup 2026 final may be subject to a delayed kick-off or postponement.

FIFA keeping tabs on New York weather conditions
According to media reports, the global football governing body is aware of the ongoing weather conditions in the host city. FIFA President Gianni Infantino is reportedly set to conduct crisis talks with the White House to assess the situation before kick-off, which takes place at 3:00 PM local time.
Thankfully, the latest reports have shown that the air quality has improved since Saturday, although conditions remained in the “unhealthy” category over the weekend. FIFA and local authorities have contingency plans in place in case the weather conditions deteriorate before or during the match.
If the air quality remains poor, the organisers have the option to introduce a second hydration break during each half. This was recently done during a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match in New York.
Other than the bad AQI readings, the rest of the weather forecast for the match is favourable, indicating sunny skies and temperatures around 27°C.
FIFA weather rules for delayed World Cup final
If adverse weather conditions affect the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, the standard safety protocols will apply. In case lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, the match will be halted for a period of 30 minutes.
Players, coaches, and match officials will return indoors, and fans will be asked to seek shelter away from the stands. After 30 minutes without any lightning strikes, the referee can allow the match to resume.
What happens if FIFA World Cup 2026 final is postponed?
Even in the case of a prolonged delay, FIFA’s priority will be to resume and complete the match on the same day once conditions become safe. However, in extreme cases, especially if the pitch becomes unplayable or if the players’ safety cannot be guaranteed, the match can be postponed by the governing body to the following day.
In case the match cannot take place on Sunday, FIFA will be forced to replay it on Monday, provided conditions become safe. If the match had already started on Sunday, play will resume from the exact moment it had stopped. The entire match will be played only if kick-off has not taken place.
Although FIFA has the power to cancel any match or even the tournament altogether, it is unlikely to exercise that power, given that the World Cup final is the most-watched sporting event in the world.
