Former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan was appointed as the new interim manager of the Uruguay national team on Thursday. The country’s football association announced the hiring via social media, confirming that the 47-year-old will replace the outgoing Marcelo Bielsa.
Bielsa stepped down from the head coach role after a humiliating group-stage exit in the FIFA World Cup 2026. La Celeste finished third in their group after just two points from three matches, failing to win even a single game.
Forlan, who previously managed two Uruguayan clubs, has been appointed interim head coach of the senior team. He will also take charge of the U-20 side. The former striker will lead La Celeste in the upcoming international friendlies before a permanent head coach is appointed at the end of 2026 or the start of 2027.
For Uruguay, this is a big gamble, considering Forlan’s lack of international management experience. However, he remains a hero in his home country from his playing days, having represented La Celeste in 112 matches, including appearances in three FIFA World Cups.
With 36 goals, he is Uruguay’s third-highest goalscorer of all time, behind only Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani. He also won the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup after helping his national team reach the semi-finals.

Diego Forlan’s playing career
Born to former Uruguay international Pablo Forlan, Diego Forlan started his footballing career with the youth teams of Penarol and Danubio. He was signed by Argentine club Independiente, rejecting an offer from Boca Juniors in the process.
After spending some time with the reserve team, he made his senior debut in 1998, playing against Argentinos Juniors. Having scored 37 goals in 80 appearances, he attracted the attention of Manchester United, who beat other European sides to secure Forlan’s services in 2002 for £7.5 million.
Although he failed to hit the heights expected of him in England, he became a fan favourite after scoring twice to secure a 2-1 league win against Liverpool. He departed for Villarreal in 2004, having scored 10 goals in 63 appearances for the Red Devils.
He was an instant success in Spain, scoring 54 goals in 106 matches for the Yellow Submarines. After just three seasons at the Ceramica, he was signed by Atletico Madrid for €21 million.
He enjoyed the best goalscoring form of his career with Los Rojiblancos, seamlessly filling the hole left by the departing Fernando Torres. He formed a brilliant partnership with Sergio Aguero, scoring 23 goals in his debut season. He scored 74 goals in 134 appearances across four seasons, prompting Inter Milan to snap him up.
Forlan’s time in Italy, however, was a massive disappointment. Having signed a two-year contract, he was released after just a single season, having scored just twice in 18 appearances.
He returned to South America, signing for Brazilian club Internacional. He found his scoring boots there again, netting 10 times in 34 matches. After that, he played for clubs all around the world, scoring goals for Cerezo Osaka in Japan, Penarol in Uruguay, and Hong Kong’s Kitchee.
He also spent time in India, appearing in 11 matches for Indian Super League (ISL) side Mumbai City FC, scoring five goals. He eventually announced his retirement from professional football in 2018.

Diego Forlan’s managerial career
Forlan was appointed as the head coach of his hometown club Penarol in December 2019. He lasted just 11 games in charge of the Yellow and Blacks, winning four times. As a result, he was sacked just 11 months into his tenure.
In 2021, he was appointed as the head coach of Uruguayan Segunda Division side Atenas. He was in charge of 23 matches, winning eight, drawing eight, and losing seven. However, he was brutally sacked in September via a Zoom call.
