Who is Eva Olid? Former Hearts coach expected to join Manchester United Women

Olid won the Scottish Premier League with Hearts.

Manchester United have appointed former Hearts manager Eva Olid as their women’s team manager. The Spanish manager is expected to meet with the United players on Wednesday as the club finalises her hiring.

She replaces Marc Skinner, who resigned from the position by mutual consent on Monday, a month before the beginning of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season.

Olid departed Hearts this summer after leading the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) team to its maiden league title last season.

She joined Hearts in 2021 and signed a contract extension until the summer of 2026 with the option of an additional year; however, the club confirmed in April that Olid will leave at the conclusion of the season by mutual consent.

Eva Olid began her coaching and management career in 2011, working for Spanish clubs such as Sant Quirze FC, Sant Cugat FC, and Sabadell FC.

In 2019, relocated abroad to assist with the Houston Dynamo/Louisiana Krewe youth and senior teams. In 2020, she temporarily returned to Spain to serve as the Catalan Football Association’s head coach.

Her breakthrough occurred in 2021, when she was named manager of Heart of Midlothian. Arriving in 2021, when the Edinburgh side was at the bottom of the league standings. Eva Olid effectively elevated the squad from amateur to completely professional status.

She subsequently guided the club to its first-ever major domestic final in the 2024 Scottish Women’s Cup, where they lost to Rangers 2-0.

Next season she led Hearts to their first Scottish Women’s Premier League title in her last season (2025-26), finishing two points ahead of Rangers.

Eva Olid’s system of play

She has been characterised as “very intriguing, in that she has looked to combine different aspects of traditional tactics from Spain, the USA and Scotland (where she has coached during her career) to come up with her own identity.”

Eva Olid’s style of play is marked by a strict adherence to a possession-based, technical approach that emphasises developing through the lines and maintaining the tempo.

Olid, strongly shaped by her Spanish football heritage, opposes long-ball tactics in favour of combination play, which allows her sides to remain confident under pressure and dominate.

She used this distinct tactical identity throughout her successful spell at Heart of Midlothian, which culminated in a unique Scottish Premier League triumph.

Who is Eva Olid?

She is a 40‑year‑old Spanish football manager who is expected to join the Manchester United Women’s team as the head coach.
