Lisandro Martinez, who has been a key player for Argentina in terms of defence, stood out as the breakthrough attacker for the defending champions during their knockout clash against Cape Verde in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 28-year-old assisted Lionel Messi for the first goal of the match before he scored for Argentina in the 92nd minute of the game, giving the side an early lead in the extra time. Martinez completed the most passes in the game (117) while making eight defensive contributions.

Lisandro Martinez was born on January 18, 1998, in Gualeguay, Entre Ríos, Argentina. He began his youth career at Club Urquiza’s academy at age 5. He later also played for Club Libertad and Newell’s Old Boys during his youth career.

Martinez also made his professional debut for Newell’s Old Boys during the 2016-17 season. In August 2017, he was loaned to another Argentine Primera División side, Defensa y Justicia. After a decent season in Florencio Varela, he was signed by Defensa y Justicia for a brief period before capturing the attention of European giants Ajax.

For Ajax, Lisandro Martinez made 76 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing five assists. He was named the Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season. Martinez also won the Eredivisie championship twice, the Dutch Cup and the Dutch Super Cup with Ajax.

In July 2022, the 28-year-old was signed by Manchester United for a reported transfer fee of £49 million, plus £8.5 million in add-ons. In December of that year, he won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, playing a crucial role in the side’s success.

He has earned 31 caps for Argentina, having won the World Cup, two Copa Americas and the Finalissima with La Albiceleste. Despite achieving massive success in his professional career, the Argentine defender has suffered from recurring injuries in recent seasons.
