Eddie Howe’s era at St. James’ Park is coming to an end

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is set to depart the club and Matthias Jaissle, the former Red Bull Salzburg and present Al-Ahli manager, will take over at St. James’ Park

The parting is amicable, and Newcastle authorities are already planning for his departure. Advanced discussions are reportedly taking place to select Al Ahli head coach Jaissle as Howe’s replacement at St James’ Park.

Jaissle has appeared as the obvious favourite to take over the management reins. The German strategist has a good relationship with Newcastle’s primary owners, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which also oversees Al Ahli.

Matthias Jaissle (born April 5, 1988) is a 38-year-old German manager and ex-professional footballer. Known for his high-intensity, offensive tactical approach, he rose to popularity after collecting consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles with Red Bull Salzburg and successive AFC Champions League victories with Al-Ahli.

His approach was mostly shaped by Ralf Rangnick and the Red Bull method. He loves a high-pressing, dynamic style with flexible formations (often a 4-3-1-2).

Red Bull Salzburg won two Austrian Championships (2021-22, 2022-23) under him and one Austrian Cup (2021-22), and advanced to the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds for the first time.

At Al-Ahli, he guided the team to consecutive AFC Champions League Elite championships (2024-2025 and 2025-2026), as well as the Saudi Super Cup.

Matthias Jaissle’s approach & formation

Matthias Jaissle typically sets up his sides in a 4-3-1-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation. The 4-3-1-2 diamond midfield offers outstanding central compactness, allowing his sides to dominate the middle.

Out of possession, the squad creates an extremely aggressive 4-1-3-2 or 4-1-3-2 pressing formation. The two attackers fiercely press the opposing centre-backs, causing turnovers in critical situations that allow them to swiftly transition into attack.

Full-backs move high up the pitch to create natural width. The number 10 plays as a playmaker, linking with central midfielders in the half-spaces, while the pacey forwards try to make straight runs behind the defensive line.

Which club Matthias Jaissle currently manage?

He is currently the manager of Al Ahli.

How old is Matthias Jaissle?

He is 38 years old.
