Argentina secured their spot after defeating Egypt in the Round of 16.
The Argentina national football team staged a dramatic comeback against African heavyweights Egypt at the Atlanta Stadium to confirm their quarter-final spot in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Argentina aimed to start the game in total control. However, Egypt shocked the heavyweights after centre-back Yasser Ibrahim scored an unstoppable header in the 15th minute to secure a shocking lead, heading in a pass from midfielder Marwan Attia.
Argentina had an immediate chance to make a comeback after Nicolás Tagliafico was fouled inside the box, earning the side a penalty. However, captain Lionel Messi’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
Despite well-crafted attacking combinations and intense pressure from Argentina, Egypt’s backline remained extremely resilient, with goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir prevailing with a string of miraculous saves.
Egypt then doubled their lead in the 67th minute, with Mostafa Ziko scoring his first goal of the tournament. With Argentina almost confirmed for elimination, the side defied all odds to stage an unbelievable comeback.
Cristian Romero initiated the comeback, scoring an incredible header in the 79th minute. Captain Lionel Messi then scored an incredible goal in the 83rd minute, becoming the first player in history to score nine consecutive World Cup matches. The nation completed the comeback in the 93rd minute, when Enzo Fernándheading in a cross by Lisandro Martínez.
Securing the win, the Lionel Scaloni-led side has secured their safe passage, with Argentina targeting to defend their title, to become only the third nation to achieve the feat.

Defeating Egypt has confirmed Argentina’s spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, with the team now set to play the winner of the Switzerland vs Colombia match in a highly anticipated heavyweight clash on July 12 at the iconic Kansas City Stadium in Missouri, USA.
If Colombia can hold their nerve and secure the victory, it will mark only their second-ever appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals, with the side first featuring in their legendary 2014 campaign.
If Switzerland manages to break through, it will cement a monumental modern milestone for the nation under manager Murat Yakin, as it will be their first quarter-final outing in 72 years, with the nation last appearing during the 1954 edition, which they hosted.
