Les Bleus strolled past La Albirroja in tonight’s Round of 16 match.
France sealed a 1-0 win over Paraguay in their Round of 16 clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on July 4. The result sealed Les Bleus’ spot in the quarter-finals in the expanded 48-team edition in North America.
Didier Deschamps’ side dominated possession right from kick-off. However, they were frustrated by the Paraguayan defence, which disrupted the attacking moves and did not allow any space in their half. As a result, the famed French forward line failed to get a shot on target in the first half.
The deadlock was finally broken just after the hour mark, when Gustavo Gomez committed a foul on Desire Doue in the penalty box. VAR asked referee Ilgiz Tantashev to take a look at the incident on the pitch-side monitor, and the Uzbek match official awarded a spot kick to Les Bleus.
Kylian Mbappe sent Orlando Gill the wrong way, finding the back of the net and tying with Lionel Messi as the top scorer in the current World Cup. The result also allowed the European giants to progress to the next stage, with Paraguay being knocked out.
