Lionel Messi made his Inter Miami return less than two weeks after facing defeat against Spain in the World Cup 2026 final. Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos provided insight into the reason behind the superstar’s quick return.
Following the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, Lionel Messi enjoyed a small holiday before returning to Inter Miami’s Fort Lauderdale training base on Wednesday.
On Saturday, August 1, Inter Miami welcomed the Columbus Crew. Rather than watching from a luxury box, Messi came on as a substitute in the 53rd minute.
With barely a few team practices under his belt, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner played in their MLS game despite barely getting enough rest following his World Cup defeat.
The skipper was introduced in the 53rd minute and immediately made an impression, unleashing four shots, but the Herons eventually settled for a 2-2 draw when Columbus midfielder Brais Mendez equalised in the 84th minute.

When asked how Messi stayed fit and returned so swiftly, Hoyos provided a straightforward explanation:
“Love for the game. The feeling towards a team as well. He is a football player, and when we are football players, we never leave football behind. Today I am a manager, but I will never stop being a football player. It is a very strong feeling.“
Inter Miami will now focus on the 2026 Leagues Cup, which will begin on Wednesday, August 5, at Nu Stadium, against Mexican side Atletico San Luis. Following his appearance against the Crew, Lionel Messi’s participation is almost certain, and he could start the match against them.
