Why does winning Community Shield lead to a bad Premier League season?

Gunners are the 2026 Community Shield winners.
In the FA Community Shield 2026 final on Sunday, title-holders Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, sending a message to all of their Premier League rivals.
Within just 25 seconds into the game, Myles Lewis-Skelly’s brilliant ball set up Riccardo Calafiori to coolly finish the first goal, shocking both City and their new manager Enzo Maresca. City’s post-Pep Guardiola era could not have gotten off to a worse start. Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard sealed the win for the Gunners.
However, a lot of people believe that winning the Community Shield is a curse because the winner does not win the Premier League championship the following season.

How many teams have won Premier League after winning Community Shield?
It is fairly uncommon for the Community Shield victors to go on to win the league, given that the current Premier League champions participate in the competition every season.
Just eight of the 34 Charity or Community Shield winners have done it since the Premier League began in 1992–1993.
Five of the incidents occurred between 2005 and 2010, a period of six years. The last side to achieve this was Manchester City in 2019; before that, it was Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in 2011.
Out of the last fifteen Community Shield winners, only one went on to win the championship that year.
Ten league titles have been won by the teams that have lost the Community Shield since 1992, including Manchester City for three consecutive years between 2021 and 2023.
Despite winning the UEFA Conference League, Crystal Palace finished 15th last year after defeating Liverpool. The Reds finished fifth in their domestic season, which was also disappointing.
The history of winners is enough to underline that the majority of clubs have failed to win the Premier League after lifting that trophy.
