Why did Jarell Quansah get red card during Mexico vs England in FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16?

England had to play more than 30 minutes with 10-men.

England had to maintain a lead at the Azteca for more than half an hour after losing Jarell Quansah following his rough tackle that resulted in a red card.

Alireza Faghani, the referee, first failed to sound the whistle for a foul. Due to heated objections from the Mexican bench and players over the high, dangerous challenge, the referee was forced to examine the pitch-side monitor.

Following a review, the match officials determined that the challenge fulfilled the requirements for a straight red card, forcing England to play with ten men.

In the 54th minute, he was sent off for a dangerous sliding tackle on Mexico’s Jesús Gallardo, as determined by a visual assistant referee (VAR) review.

The sending off reduced England to ten players when leading 2-1, dramatically altering the form and stakes of the Round of 16 encounter.

What had been a challenging but doable second-half job for England became a survival test: defend a one-goal advantage, control the crowd, and play the remainder of regulation without the right back who had begun the match.

Jarell Quansah was sent off with a straight red card, leaving 10-man England with a 2-1 advantage after around 54 minutes.

Quansah went over the ball, missing his target, and his studs landed squarely on the Mexican player’s leg, Jesus Gallardo.

Bukayo Saka, on the other hand, was substituted off in the 57th minute for tactical reasons. Manager Thomas Tuchel replaced him with defender John Stones, altering the formation to safeguard the lead after Jarell Quansah was sent off.

The Three Lions managed to come out victorious even with 10 men in a 3-2 victory.

Why did Jarell Quansah get a red card against Mexico?

Because of his rash challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

Why was Bukayo Saka taken off?

It was due to a tactical adjustment after the red card.
