The silence was in commemoration of the recently departed Jesus de Miguel.

A minute’s silence was observed before all the UEFA Champions League 2026-27 league-phase fixtures tonight in memory of CD Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel Alameda, who died at the age of 30 on Tuesday following an on-field collision.

The tragic incident happened in added time of a Spanish Segunda División match between Tenerife and FC Andorra on Monday. Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono came rushing out of his goal to challenge for a long ball near the half-way line, colliding with De Miguel.

The Tenerife forward dropped to his knees, clutching his torso, before falling onto the pitch. He was surrounded by players from both teams, including Owono, who was shown a straight red card.

He reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated before being taken to hospital. However, he sadly died on Tuesday morning, Tenerife announced in a statement.

“There are no words of comfort,” the statement read. “There is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this profound sense of sorrow. We stand with his devastated family, his loved ones, and the entire Tenerife community.”

Ceferin announced that a minute’s silence will be observed before all of this week’s fixtures in the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League, and the Conference League.

Meanwhile, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also suspended all first-round Copa del Rey and third-round Copa de la Reina matches scheduled for Tuesday following De Miguel’s death.
