Why was Nico Williams’ goal disallowed in Spain vs Argentina FIFA World Cup 2026 final?

Nico Williams found the back of the net in the 96th minute of Spain vs Argentina.
Spain took on Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19. Both sides gave it their all in an attempt to end up as victors in the expanded 48-team edition in North America, but the deadlock could not be broken in regulation time.
La Roja had multiple shots at Emiliano Martinez’s goal but failed to beat the Aston Villa goalkeeper. The defending champions, on the other hand, failed to get away a single shot towards the Spanish goal.
Luis de la Fuente’s men thought they had finally found the breakthrough soon after the start of extra time. Lamine Yamal’s deft touch found Mikel Merino in the box, who held off the challenge from Nicolas Otamendi before having a shot. Martinez made a save, but the loose ball fell kindly for Williams, who poked it into the back of the net.
However, the youngster’s celebration was cut short as the referee signalled an infringement. While it initially seemed like he had signalled for offside, it became clear he had awarded a free-kick to Argentina.

Why was Nico Williams’ goal not given?
Referee Slavko Vincic adjudged that Merino had fouled Otamendi in the buildup. Although replays showed minimal contact from the Arsenal midfielder, the Slovenian match officials ruled in favour of the defending champions. As a result, Williams’ goal was overruled.
Despite this setback, La Roja took the lead immediately after the restart of the extra-time second half. Williams turned provider this time, setting up Ferran Torres perfectly, allowing the Barcelona forward to fire his shot into the roof of the net past a helpless Emiliano Martinez.
