EXPLAINED: Why will PSG only wear new crest in Champions League and not Ligue 1?

PSG unveiled a new two-star crest ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Paris Saint-Germain had a wonderful outing last season, becoming only the second team in the UEFA Champions League era to win back-to-back titles. The Parisian giants, who also clinched the Ligue 1 title, celebrated this historic continental win with a special gesture.
Ahead of the new season, PSG released an updated club crest, featuring two Eiffel Tower-shaped stars above their club’s logo. The two stars represent the two Champions League titles that the French club has won, in 2025 and 2026.
This information was revealed by club insider La Source Parisienne, who also claimed that PSG will wear this updated crest on their jerseys only during their UEFA Champions League matches. However, during their matches in Ligue 1 and the domestic cups, they will wear jerseys featuring crests without any stars.
Unverified rumours online claimed that this is due to Ligue 1 guidelines, which supposedly do not allow any modifications to club crests. However, La Source Parisienne revealed that the decision not to wear their star-studded crest in the league is one taken by the club themselves.
This reportedly “stems from a desire to maintain a clean kit aesthetic without an excess of patches, as well as a club mentality focused on securing future titles rather than resting on recent successes,” as quoted by Footy Headlines.
The club are reportedly looking forward to adding more Champions League titles to their trophy cabinet, and will thus focus on a clean kit during their league matches.

Why do PSG have two stars on their crests?
Clubs around the world often add stars to their crests. However, these stars represent different things in different leagues.
In the Italian Serie A, clubs are allowed to add one star to their crest for every 10 league titles they win. The Bundesliga follows a tiered system, with three titles earning one star, five titles earning two stars, 10 titles earning three stars, 20 titles earning four stars, and 30 titles earning five stars.
The Premier League and La Liga have no fixed rules regarding stars on crests. Therefore, clubs often do so independently to commemorate historic title wins or represent local symbols.
In Ligue 1, clubs add a star for every Champions League trophy they have won, or for each 10 league titles they win. St-Etienne have 10 domestic titles; therefore, they have a star on their crest.
Marseille became the first club to add a star to their crest for their Champions League win in 1993. Paris Saint-Germain followed suit after their continental title win in 2025, adding a star to their own crest and then a second star after their victory over Arsenal in the UCL final last season.
