Why did Savinho change name to Savio after signing for Tottenham Hotspur?
The Brazilian became the seventh major signing for Spurs.
Brazilian winger Savinho, who sealed a permanent transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, has announced a change to his name. The 22-year-old attacker, who signed for Spurs from Manchester City, will be known as Savio from now on.
Born in São Mateus, Espírito Santo, Savinho’s full name is Savio Moreira de Oliveira. However, he was known as ‘Savinho’ during his two-year spell at Manchester City. This is the name that was printed on the back of his No. 28 jersey.
However, this has not always been the name the youngster has used. He was previously known as Savio before joining City. He was known by this shortened name during his loan spells at PSV and Girona, where he became popular in LaLiga.
Now at Tottenham, he will wear the No. 17 shirt with the name Savio. The shirt was revealed by the North London club during his presentation on Tuesday.

After signing for Tottenham, now Savio as per kit name, the player explained the reason behind his name change. He explained that the nickname originated during his time with the Brazilian national team.
“(My name change) is because in the national team, (during) the first call-up they put Savinho on the shirt,” the player said in an interview in July 2024.
“People in Girona knew me more as Savinho; it was just written Savio on the shirt, you know? So I told (City) to put Savinho on the shirt, and I hope it brings me luck too, this name Savinho.”
Unfortunately, Savio had a tough time breaking into City’s starting lineup. He managed seven goals across all competitions in 84 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side, falling down the pecking order.
Although the player did not reveal the reason behind his name change, this is likely why he has opted for Savio.
The Brazilian youngster will hope that his name change will bring a change in his fortunes. He could walk straight into Tottenham’s starting lineup. The player can make his Tottenham debut in the Carabao Cup 2026-27 match against Charlton Athletic.
