Why Rangers & Celtic's Scottish Premiership matches postponed for this weekend?

Only the Dundee derby game, from the original schedule, will be played today.

Although today is Saturday, the Scottish Premiership will have a rather quiet weekend. Fans who are used to binge-watching games will have to settle for only one match tonight. Why so? Let’s find out.

Scottish Premiership follows the usual European football calendar. We have already witnessed two games played for each of the 12 sides in the league, giving an early shape to the standings. But on matchday 3, things will be a bit unusual.

Only one game is set to be completed tonight. Dundee United F.C. vs Dundee F.C. will be the one to kick off. Apart from this Dundee derby game, the other matches have been postponed to a later date.

It includes games involving notable teams such as Rangers and Celtic. But why have they been postponed?

Several interesting teams, such as Celtic, Rangers and Motherwell, whose games were originally scheduled for today, Saturday 22 August, have been postponed. As one might initially think, it has nothing to do with the post-FIFA World Cup 2026 break or anything.

These three, along with Hearts and Hibernian, have already played two league matches. But they decided to call for a delay (postponement) of today’s games. All five of these clubs are active in playoff matches for either of the UEFA-based tournaments, such as the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League.

They have exercised an SPFL rule to allow them better rest and preparation for the UEFA play-off matches. This also essentially helps the league have more exposure in terms of recognition and popularity, if their teams make it to the main competition.

Three of these teams will play their originally scheduled 22 August William Hill Premiership match on Tuesday, September 15. Those matches are: Falkirk vs Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian vs Kilmarnock and Motherwell vs Aberdeen.
