Why will Jarell Quansah miss two FIFA World Cup 2026 matches? Suspension explained

Jarell Quansah has made two appearances in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has been full of surprising moments and controversial refereeing calls. Recently, France submitted a challenge to Michael Olise’s yellow card from their victory over Paraguay, but FIFA dismissed it.
Before that, Argentina’s 3-2 comeback triumph over Egypt was also seen as heavily controversial, as French François Letexier eventually had to deactivate his social media accounts. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) lodged a complaint against Letexier, and he’s under scrutiny by FIFA.
One such call was also made during England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16. Jarell Quansah was sent off in the second half; however, his ban has now been increased to two games.

Why is England’s Jarell Quansah suspended for two games at the FIFA World Cup 2026?
The Bayer Leverkusen defender was sent off in the 54th minute during the Three Lions’ 3-2 triumph over Mexico following a high challenge on full-back Jesus Gallardo. The decision was confirmed by the referee after a VAR review.
Initially, the former Liverpool defender was suspended for one match; however, under Article 14 of their code of conduct, his suspension was increased by one match after he was deemed to have committed serious foul play.
England were reportedly considering appealing the decision; however, under the tournament regulations, there is no avenue to contest the ban. Due to the ban, Jarell Quansah will miss the side’s upcoming quarterfinal clash against Norway and the semifinal against Argentina or Switzerland if they manage to win the last 8 game.
The suspension has added to the defence woes for the English side. With Reece James sidelined due to fitness issues, Ezri Konsa would have to move from his centre-back role against Norway.
However, the decision has again sparked debate over the controversial one-match ban on Folarin Balogun. The American striker was sent off during the co-hosts’ round of 32 clash against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
However, after US President Donald Trump contacted the relevant authorities, the 25-year-old’s ban was lifted, and he became eligible to play in the USA’s round-of-16 clash against Belgium. Trump later revealed calling Gianni Infantino three times to request a review of that red card. The decision later faced criticism from football teams and coaches.
