The grandest event in the history of mankind, the FIFA World Cup 2026, is inching closer to its business end. From 48 teams dreaming of becoming world champions to currently 8 in contention, the remaining eight games will determine the fate of the tournament.
With the advent of VAR, officials have adopted a stricter approach, with the total cards in the FIFA World Cup breaking all records in the last five editions. Apart from just big upsets and goals, World Cup 2026 has been in the news and the subject of controversy for refereeing decisions.
From VAR intervening in Croatia’s stoppage-time equaliser against Portugal, Egypt’s counter-attack goal against Argentina getting ruled out, to Balogun’s suspension being overturned, there have been fingers pointed towards the referees and VAR decisions.
Across 92 games so far, a total of 223 yellow cards and 13 red cards have been shown. This may look like mere statistics, but the number of cards per foul committed varies massively across various teams.
However, it is to be noted that the nature of the foul often decides whether the player gets a booking or a warning is enough. In this article, we take a look at the number of yellow cards received by various teams in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

8. Norway: 2 yellow cards

Norway pulled off one of the biggest heists against five-time world champions Brazil. The Norwegians got the better of Brazil 2-1 after a brace from Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in the last game.
They have been one of the most disciplined teams in the tournament, conceding just 2 cards so far. As of now, only Antonio Nusa is at risk of missing out on the semis. They will be locking horns with the Three Lions in the quarter-finals next.

So far, only Ferran Torres is at risk of missing out on the semis after picking up a yellow against Portugal.
6. Argentina: 3 yellow cards
Argentina, reigning world champions, pulled out one of the biggest comebacks in World Cup history after overturning a two-goal deficit to win it 3-2 against Egypt. They are now all set to face Switzerland in the quarterfinal fixture.
Despite question marks over referring decisions, Argentina have been highly disciplined and only Gonzalo Montiel is at risk of missing out on the semis after picking up a yellow against Cape Verde.
5. France: 4 yellow cards
Les Blues have been a very difficult team to beat. They are one of the favourites to win the World Cup this year, and they boast of one of the most valuable squads in the tournament. They, however, had a tough time scoring a goal against Paraguay in the last match.
However, Deschamps must be careful as two of his star players in the offence, including the likes of Olise and Barcola, are at serious risk of missing out on the semis after picking up a yellow in the knockouts.
4. Belgium: 4 yellow cards
The Red Devils had a pretty lacklustre start to the campaign, but they rediscovered their lost form at the right time and are coming after wins over Senegal and the USA. They have seen a total of four yellow cards and one red card.
Coach Rudi Garcia picked a yellow and must hold his nerves to avoid missing out on the touchlines in the semi-finals. Brandon Mechele also picked up a yellow card.

PSG fullback and captain Achraf Hakimi, alongside Stuttgart star Bilal El Khannouss and Azzedine Ounahi, are at risk of missing the semi-finals if they pick up another card.
2. Switzerland: 6 yellow cards
Nobody saw Murat Yakin’s side making it to the Quarterfinals. Colombia were the favourites, but the Swiss went on to defeat the South American giants after Kobel’s heroics between the sticks. They are now set to face Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the quarterfinals.
Captain Granit Xhaka, who is playing his fourth World Cup, is at risk of missing out alongside Monaco’s Zakaria. They have conceded a total of six yellow cards so far.
1. England: 7 yellow cards

England have conceded the most cards per foul committed in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Three Lions are coming after a win over hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 clash.
Leverkusen fullback Jarrel Quansah picked up a red card and is out of the Norway game. Shockingly, England’s star player Jude Bellingham, alongside Declan Rice, Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly, must be very careful against Norway to avoid any bookings as they are at risk of missing the semi-finals.
