All clubs to reach Europa League final without losing single game during campaign

The 2024-25 Europa League final will see Man Utd face fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

The Europa League has seen many impressive teams go on to win the trophy, while some have established new records. For this season’s final, we have Manchester United, who beat Athletic Bilbao 7-1 on aggregate to secure their place in the final, which will take place in San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.

While reaching the final, they also set a new record. With this, we will take a look at those clubs that went without losing a single game during the campaign below.

7. Benfica (2013-14)

Benfica started their 2013-14 campaign in the Champions League but couldn’t secure a place in the round of 16 as they finished third in the group stage. They were dropped down to the Europa League, where they went on an excellent run as they beat all the teams. They also beat the competition’s host, Juventus, in the semi-final to reach the final.

However, in the final, they met Sevilla, and after the game ended in a 1-1 draw in normal time, they lost the match 4-1 against the Spanish side on penalties.

6. Chelsea (2018-19)

Following the draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2018–19 campaign, Chelsea set a record for the longest undefeated streak in the history of the Europa League.

Just before halftime, Pedro scored the crucial away goal to put Chelsea in a solid position to advance to the Baku Europa League final.

However, the outcome also gave Chelsea an outstanding record, going 16 matches unbeaten in that season; they defeated English rivals Arsenal 4-1 in the final.

5. Inter Milan (2019-20)

Inter Milan were the best team in the competition in the 2019-20 season and were the favourites to lift the trophy after coming to the final without a defeat. However, after finishing third in the Champions League group, they were demoted to the Europa League, where they had a different fate.

From the play-off to the semi-final, they went on to defeat every side but couldn’t win the final as they were beaten by Sevilla 3-2 in the final.

4. Villarreal (2020-21)

After a 1-1 tie with Manchester United that season, Villarreal made history by winning on an exciting penalty shootout 11–10. Goalie Geronimo Rulli scored his team’s eleventh goal before diving back in goal to deny United rival David de Gea’s penalty kick.

After winning the Europa League three times with Sevilla, it was Emery’s fourth win as manager, but it was also Villarreal’s first significant trophy. Another record they set was going the entire competition without losing a single game during that campaign.

3. Eintracht Frankfurt (2021-22)

With a penalty-shootout victory over Rangers to cap off an incredible season, Eintracht Frankfurt were named Europa League winners for the 2021–2022 campaign.

Frankfurt played their thirteenth Europa League game of the season in the final. Including the final, which ended 1-1 before penalties, they conquered seven of the games and drew six others.

Frankfurt became the third team in the history of the Europa League to win the league without suffering a single defeat during that season.

2. Bayer Leverkusen (2023-24)

After a 2-2 draw with Roma, Bayer Leverkusen advanced to the Europa League final against Atalanta in Dublin. Leverkusen eclipsed Benfica’s record for the longest streak without a loss by a top-flight side since the start of European participation last season.

However, their record of unbeaten streak and ambitions of winning a continental treble were ended when they lost 3-0 to Atalanta in the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League final.

1. Manchester United (2024-25)

The only team still undefeated in the 2024-25 season’s European play is Manchester United. Considering their domestic difficulties, it is a remarkable accomplishment, but they really shine in the Europa League. Twenty of their 35 goals have come during the knockout stage.

There is no better motivation for United to finish on a high note at San Mamés Stadium after a season of Premier League struggle. With a strong track record in European play, including a 2016–17 Europa League victory, they are motivated to make more enchanted memories and appear to be timing their run to perfection.
