Top 10 clubs with most Europa League titles
The second-tier European competition has seen some exciting finals.
Since its inception, the Europa League has been a major underrated competition, usually overshadowed by the Champions League. In reality, Europa League is just as tough and thrilling as the Champions League. You can ask FC Barcelona, one of the most successful clubs in the world if it is competitive because they have failed in the knockout stages twice in a row. Even big teams like Manchester United have had difficulty cracking the Europa League code, but some clubs have managed to do so.
Let's look at the top 10 clubs with the most Europa League titles.
10. Tottenham Hotspurs - 2 titles
The Tottenham Hotspurs team has been suffering from a trophy drought since 2008, but they are still the winner of two UEFA Europa League trophies. They won their first trophy in 1971-72 against the Wolves on an aggregate score of 3-2. After a 2-2 aggregate score in 1983-84, Spurs defeated Anderlecht 4-3 on penalties to clinch their second title. Since then, they have not tasted success in Europe.
9. Eintracht Frankfurt- 2 titles
The German team has won two UEFA Europa League trophies, despite not being a household name in European competition. After defeating their German counterpart Borussia Monchengladbach in the 1979/80 season final on away goals, they won the first title. Their second title came last season when they won on penalties against Rangers after a 1-1 match ended.
8. FC Porto - 2 titles
Porto is the only Portuguese club to have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup, and to have achieved a continental treble. Porto won their first Europa League title in the 2001/02 season after defeating Celtic 2-3 in extra time. Derlei was the star of the tournament for them as he finished as the tournament's top scorer with 12 goals. Their second triumph came in the 2010/11 season.
7. Chelsea FC - 2 titles
Chelsea is one of the regular names on the European scene. They are winners of both the Champions League and the Europa League. Surprisingly, their first triumph came in the 2012/13 season, the season after their Champions League win in 2011/12. They defeated Benfica 1-2 in the final to lift the cup for the first time. Their second triumph came during the 2018/19 season after they defeated Arsenal in the finals.
6. Real Madrid CF- 2 titles
Many people know that Real Madrid have won the UEFA Champions League many times, but many people don't realize that they have also won two Europa Cups also. They won the first Europa League in 1984/85 when they defeated Fehervar 3-1 on aggregate. Their second triumph came in the following season only in 1985/86, when they defeated FC Koln on an aggregate score of 3-5 to win the Europa League.
5. Atletico Madrid - 3 titles
Real Madrid's city rivals Atletico Madrid are next. They haven't won a Champions League title, but they have three Europa League titles under their belt. The first triumph was in 2009/10 when they won the final 2-1 against Fulham. In the 2011-12 season, they won for the second time after beating fellow Spanish side Athletic Bilbao. Their third victory came in the 2017/18 season.
4. Inter Milan - 3 titles
In the European landscape, Inter Milan has won three Europa League and Champions League titles, making it one of the most successful teams in history. Their first Europa League win occurred in 1990/91 when they defeated AS Roma 1-2 on aggregate to win the title. In 1993/94, they won Europa for the second time against Salzburg. Their last Europa League title came in 1997/98.
3. Juventus- 3 titles
One of the strongest teams in Europe is Juventus, who have won the Europa League several times. They have been unlucky in Champions League finals many, but they always staked their authority in the Europa League. After beating Bilbao on away goals in 1976/77, they won their first Europa League championship. In 1989/90, they won the second title, while in 1992/93, they won it for the last time, defeating Borussia Dortmund 6-1 on aggregate.
2. Liverpool - 3 titles
With the most Champions League and Europa League titles to their name, Liverpool is the most successful English team in Europe. In 1972/73 they won the Europa League by defeating Borussia Monchengladbach 2-3 on aggregate to become champions. Their second triumph came in 1975/76 when they defeated Club Brugge 3-4 on aggregate score and their third triumph came in 2000-01 when they won a golden goal 5-4 to become the champions.
1. Sevilla - 7 titles
The Europa League has never seen a team with a more successful record than Sevilla. Sevilla won the league in 2022-23, 2019/20, 2015/16, 2014/15, 2013/14, 2006/07, and 2005/06. They were coached by Unai Emery three times in these triumphs. Sevilla might not be a household name in Champions League land, but they are undisputed champions in Europa League.
