This time, the flagship tournament has 104 matches.

The FIFA World Cup returns every four years. This is also considered the biggest stage of football. The 2026 edition is taking place in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

This time around, a total of 48 teams have found their way into the mega competition, where 1,248 players are battling it out for the prestigious title. But only the deserving lot of players will be crowned as the world champions.

Lionel Messi‘s Argentina are battling it out to retain their World Cup crown from 2022. They are the three-time winners of the flagship tournament and have a capable squad to lift another. France, Spain and England are also the favourites to lift the prestigious title this year due to their recent form and star-studded lineups.

Many players have scored goals in the FIFA World Cup 2026; only a select few have managed to score from direct free-kicks. The first goal at this year’s flagship tournament was scored by Julian Quinones of Mexico, who fired the ball at the back of the net against South Africa.

Canada’s Nathan Saliba was the first to score a goal from a direct free-kick this year. He did so against Qatar, who were down to nine men in their second group stage game. Players get a boost after scoring such goals. It will now be interesting to see all the names who are going to be engraved on the list of direct free-kick goals this year.
