Uruguay went into their final 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage encounter in a tough position, having drawn twice. It put their World Cup round of 32 hopes in danger.
Their World Cup campaign began with a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia before settling for another frustrating 2-2 stalemate with Cape Verde. The latter one came in their second group stage match.
Following dismal draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde to begin the campaign, the South American powerhouse needed at least a point against Spain to escape elimination.
La Celeste have always been one of the greatest overachievers in international football, in terms of population size. They are knocked out by La Roja. They failed to get even one World Cup win.
It’s a shame for a country that has been one of the most competent nations at the international level, but has always disappointed in major tournaments.
Uruguay were eliminated from the World Cup group stage for the second time in a row. The last elimination came in 2022.

Uruguay have been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after losing 1-0 to Spain in Guadalajara. All they needed was a draw to avoid early elimination from the competition. But it proved too much for the two-time world Champions.
Alex Baena capitalised on another Fernando Muslera blunder to give the European champions a first-half lead. Due to the mistake, Marcelo Bielsa replaced Uruguay’s custodian at halftime.
It was the most embarrassing way to go out of the tournament. Uruguay have once again demonstrated that when the stakes are high, they are bound to fall short under pressure.
Once again, they are returning home from the World Cup group stage after experiencing it in the 2022 edition.
