Argentina announce squad numbers for Copa America 2024; Lionel Messi to wear no 10

Lionel Messi is set to wear the legendary no 10 jersey again
The Argentina national football team, led by coach Lionel Scaloni, confirmed their 26-man squad for Copa America 2024 on Saturday, which included a few surprising decisions. The biggest exclusion from the final squad was the 30-year-old Roma forward Paulo Dybala.
The squad numbers are also out for La Albiceleste as they gear up for the tournament. Captain Lionel Messi, widely regarded as LM10, will wear the iconic No. 10 jersey as usual.
In the goalkeeping department, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, who is a guaranteed starter in goal, will wear No. 23 for Argentina. Backup options for Franco Armani and Gerónimo Rulli are set to wear No. 1 and No. 12 on their backs, respectively.
In the defensive backline, the centre-back pairing of Nicolas Otamendi and Cristian Romero are going to wear No. 19 and No. 13, respectively, as they look to form a rock-solid partnership to help Argentina become champions again.
The talented midfield duo of Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister are set to wear the No. 24 and No. 20 on their backs, respectively, as they look to provide defensive cover for the backline and also assist in the execution of the attacking transitions during matches, which proved to be so crucial in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph.
Finally in attack, veteran Angel Di Maria, who is set to retire from international football post-Copa America, will be seen wearing the special No. 11 jersey for one last time. Manchester City’s sensational young forward Julian Alvarez is set to deliver the goods this summer in the revered No. 9 shirt.
Favourites Argentina are set to kick off Copa America 2024 proceedings against newbies Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. They are placed in Group A of the competition alongside the likes of Canada, Chile, and Peru.
