Slot has won the Dutch league with Feyenoord

Arne Slot of Feyenoord is a candidate to be Liverpool’s new manager this summer. In the hiring process spearheaded by upcoming sporting director Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, the Fenway Sports Group’s new chief executive officer of football, Slot has emerged as a formidable contender to replace Jürgen Klopp.

Slot is one of the front-runners for the job, but Liverpool have been screening possible new managers through middlemen rather than in-person interviews. The 45-year-old was successful at AZ before moving on to Feyenoord in 2021, where he replaced Dick Advocaat.

After finishing third in the Eredivisie in the inaugural campaign, he guided the Rotterdam team to the first-ever Europa Conference League final. In his second season, the team claimed the Dutch league title, and on Sunday, they defeated NEC Nijmegen 1-0 to win the KNVB Cup for this season.

With two years left on the deal he raised with Feyenoord in May, Slot will have rivals such as Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Milan for his signature this summer. His aggressive playing style and accomplishments on a relatively small budget have drawn significant interest, such as from Tottenham this past season.

After taking over for Brendan Rodgers at Anfield in October 2015, Klopp has won the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool. In January of this year, he declared his intention to leave the role at the conclusion of the current campaign.

After the 56-year-old surprised everyone by announcing his decision to Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool, last November, Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan stated that the team would select a new manager using a “data-led” methodology.

Michael Edwards, the former sporting director, took up his position as head of football operations at Anfield last month. He was tasked with finding and hiring Klopp’s replacement. Sources told ESPN that Slot, who led Feyenoord to the Dutch championship the previous year, has emerged as a serious candidate for the Liverpool position.
