Leandro Trossard’s goal was enough to send the Gunners to the top of the table

With a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in the first half thanks to a goal by Leandro Trossard, Arsenal maintained their title aspirations and took the top spot in the Premier League table.

After Trossard penalised some careless United marking in the 20th minute by tapping home Kai Havertz’s cutback, Mikel Arteta’s team delivered a functional rather than inspiring performance to move one point above Manchester City despite playing a game more.

Arsenal had only won the league at Old Trafford twice in the previous seventeen years, but the well-earned success puts the spotlight back on City, who play West Ham at the Etihad on Sunday and visit Tottenham on Tuesday.

Although Arsenal has won 15 of its last 17 Premier League games, City must lose before Pep Guardiola’s club hosts Everton in the season’s last game on Sunday.

As the last day approaches, the Gunners are still very much in the running for their first championship since 2004.

During the last, anxious minutes of play, United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana leapt to block shots from Declan Rice and replacement Gabriel Martinelli as the game swung from end to end.

With two games remaining, United is in eighth place, three points behind sixth-place Newcastle in the race for a spot in the European tournament the following year.

All that Arsenal wanted was that goal. Despite ever coming out of second gear, their consistently strong defence neutralised United’s inexperienced front line, kept them at bay, and secured a clean sheet. Mikel Arteta wins at Old Trafford, and he might win the Premier League at the conclusion of the season.

Arsenal has exhausted all of their options in the title race thus far by doing the bare minimum here. Although it was unattractive, there could potentially be drama on the final day.

At least that’s where Mikel Arteta’s team has led the title chase, and after a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, Manchester City now needs to triumph against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday. There are now a lot of intricate plots in that game in the last week, so Arteta wanted to maintain it as straightforward as possible.
