There are no more dominating sights in football than Bayern Munich defeating Arsenal. The North Londoners have found a menacing rival opponents who know how to win big against them. In their last 3 meetings, Bayern have won each game with a scoreline of 5-1.
While the Gunners have a win or two in their bag, they have difficulties facing the Bavarians in the Champions League knockout stage. Let’s look at the top five past clashes between the two sides.
Bayern 5 – 1 Arsenal (UCL group stage 2015-16)
Bayern Munich thrashed Arsenal 5-1 in the group stage of the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League. The match played at the Allianz Arena in Munich, was a one-sided affair. Bayern dominated from the start, racing to a 3-0 lead at halftime thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski, Muller, and Alaba. Robben and Muller added two more in the second half for Bayern, while Olivier Giroud grabbed a consolation goal for Arsenal. This result was part of a run of three consecutive 5-1 victories for Bayern against Arsenal.
Arsenal 1 – 3 Bayern (1st leg 2012-13 R016)
In the first leg of the 2012-13 Champions League Round of 16 clash, Bayern Munich emerged victorious 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium. The German giants struck early with goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller within the first 21 minutes.
Arsenal fought back with a Lukas Podolski goal in the second half, but Bayern squashed any hope of a comeback with a late Madzukic goal. The 3-1 deficit left Arsenal needing a significant win in Munich to progress.

Bayern 0 – 2 Arsenal (2nd leg 2012-13 RO16)
The much-talked-about second leg of the 2012-13 Champions League Round of 16 between Bayern Munich and Arsenal wasn’t what Bayern fans expected! Arsenal emerged victorious 2-0 at the Allianz Arena, but unfortunately for them, it wasn’t enough to see them progress to the next round. As the 3-1 loss at home pegged their hopes of qualification during the time when ‘away goals’ rule was still in play.
Bayern 5 – 1 Arsenal (1st leg 2016-17 RO16)
Bayern Munich crushed Arsenal 5-1 in the first leg of the 2016-17 Champions League Round of 16. The match at the Allianz Arena was a nightmare for Arsenal as Bayern ran riot. An early Arjen Robben strike put pressure on the North Londoners, who did score the leveler through Alexis Sanchez in the first half.
However, it was just left to be a consolation as the home side scored four in the second half! A brace from Thiago Alcantara and a goal each from – Lewandowski and Muller sealed the deal for the Bavarians.
Arsenal 1 – 5 Bayern (2nd leg 2016-17 R016)
Arsenal’s second leg against Bayern Munich in the 2016-17 Champions League Round of 16 was another hefty defeat, solidifying a crushing 10-2 aggregate loss.
The Gunners started with a glimmer of hope, with Theo Walcott scoring in the 20th minute. However, a controversial red card for Laurent Koscielny in the 54th minute turned the tide. Robert Lewandowski converted the resulting penalty to equalize for Bayern.
With Arsenal a man down, Bayern capitalized ruthlessly. Goals from Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa and a brace by Arturo Vidal sealed a 5-1 win for the German giants.
