Mathew Ryan will lead Australia in the World Cup.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is less than two weeks from its grand commencement. With every passing second, the excitement for football’s biggest showdown is only increasing.

The newest edition will be hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada, marking history by being the first World Cup to be hosted by three nations. Adding to its historical significance, the competition will witness a record 48 nations compared to the previous 32.

Every tournament features nations who gets overlooked and go on to make a massive impact in the tournament. The Australia national football team is one such nation. The side will have huge expectations upon them after an impressive 2022 campaign.

They made headlines after navigating out of a difficult group. This was before ultimately falling to the eventual champions, Argentina, in the Round of 16.

After enduring a rigorous qualification campaign for the previous edition, where they had to play gruelling 20 matches, Australia had a simpler 2026 qualifier campaign. This time, they qualified directly after finishing second in their AFC qualifiers group. This also marked the first time the Oceania side achieved direct automatic qualification to the World Cup.

Veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan has been tasked with guiding the Socceroos through the new, compelling World Cup. With his appearance on North American soil, Ryan will become the joint-highest player alongside Tim Cahill and Mark Milligan to represent the historic giants in four separate World Cup campaigns.

The Levante custodian will have numerous talents at his disposal, with the most notable names being Alessandro Circati and Cristian Volpato. Circati, despite his young age, has solidified his place in the Australian defence, paired with his excellent breakout season at Parma. Volpato’s inclusion was one of the biggest pre-tournament surprises.

The Sassuolo attacker switched his national allegiance from Italy to Australia. He was drafted right away into the Socceroos roster and provided the much-needed creativity.

Before any knockout planning, Australia will first have to navigate through a difficult group, featuring like-minded nations that will all be locking horns for the coveted title. They are placed in Group D for the tournament, competing with the United States, Paraguay and Türkiye.

While the United States sealed their spot after automatic qualification as tournament hosts, Paraguay utilised their defensive resilience to finish in the top six of the CONEMBOL qualifiers. Türkiye had their place secured after narrowly defeating Kosovo 1-0 in the European play-offs, sending the Crescent stars to their first tournament since 2002.
