Australia vs Egypt: Top five players to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026 clash ft. Mohamed Salah & Jackson Irvine

Seven-time AFCON champions Egypt eye a win over Socceroos in Round of 32 clash at Dallas

Dallas Stadium in the United States of America gears up to host the Round of 32 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where former Asian champions Australia and seven-time AFCON champions Egypt lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

The Socceroos shocked the world when they got the better of Turkiye in the opening game before they went down to the USA. A goalless draw against Paraguay was enough to seal a top-two berth for Popovic’s side. Australia are ranked two spots higher than Egypt, and it will be a mouth-watering clash.

The Pharaohs endured an unbeaten group stage campaign and finished second in Group G, level on points with table-toppers Belgium. They have scored five times so far and conceded three. Unfortunately, they have too many injury concerns, and captain Salah must lead Egypt from the front.

On football’s grandest stage, ninety minutes can transform great players into national heroes. This highly anticipated showdown promises a tactical war, but the outcome rests on the boots of a few special individuals. In this article, we shall take a look at the top five players to keep an eye on.

Mohamed Salah (Egypt)

Arguably one of the greatest Africans of all time, Salah would be keen to make his last dance at the FIFA World Cup a memorable one. He has so far scored once and given two assists in the games against New Zealand and Belgium.

The two-time English champion and UEFA Champions League winner with Liverpool, Salah would be up against a strong defensive Australian backline, boasting Leicester’s Souttar and Parma’s Alessandro Circati. Salah must step up in this big game and propel his side to victory.

Trezeguet (Egypt)

The Kafr El Sheikh-born midfielder, Trezeguet, plies his trade for Egyptian outfit Al Ahly and has previously donned jerseys of European teams like Aston Villa, Basaksehir and Anderlecht.

Named after the French World Cup-winning striker David Trezeguet, the 31-year-old has a terrifying transitional acceleration, and it is very difficult to chase him for ninety minutes straight. Most importantly, he also tracks backwards to help the defence in need.

Cristian Volpato (Australia)

Born in Camperdown, the western suburbs of Sydney, the 22-year-old is yet to shine so far for Australia in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He started the last game for the Socceroos and will be up against a tight Egyptian defence, which has been very tight, conceding just three goals so far.

After playing for the youth teams of Italy, he pledged his allegiance to Australia and has been a strong pillar in the Australian setup. A highly technical, creative, and fluid inverted playmaker, Volpato will try to operate from the right flank and drift into the pocket-sized spaces.

Jordan Bos (Australia)

The Melbourne-born wingback has risen through the ranks of Melbourne City FC before embarking on a European odyssey with Westerlo. He made a high-profile switch to Feyenoord in the Eredivisie and has been brilliant so far. He is a highly modern, explosive, and technically fluid attacking full-back.

Tony Popovic’s primary wide outlet, Bos, delivered a brilliant performance in their final Group D fixture against Paraguay and almost snatched a late winner against the South American outfit. He possesses an extraordinary athletic ability and can run up the wings all alone.

Jackson Irvine (Australia)

Irvine is one of the highly decorated Australian players in the squad, winning the Scottish Cup with Celtic, League Cup with Ross County. After plying his trade for Hull City and Hibernian, he made a move to Germany with St Pauli and was part of the team that won the second tier and clinched promotion to Bundesliga.

The tactical heartbeat of the Socceroos’ engine room, Irvine is yet to impress much. But he is a big game player and Irvine’s presence will be crucial for Australia as they eye a big win over Egypt and advance to the Round of 16.
