How is the Ballon d’Or awarded?

Three primary factors are used to award the Ballon d’Or:

1) Self-performance, decisiveness, and remarkable character2) Group accomplishments and performances3) Fair play and class

An international panel of specialized journalists, one from each nation, selects the winner of the Ballon d’Or from the top 50 for women and the top 100 for men in the most recent FIFA rankings (prior to the lists being released).

The staff of editors of France Football, people from the editorial board of L’Équipe, the top-ranked juror from the previous version (South Africa for the women’s Ballon d’Or, and Costa Rica for the men’s), and UEFA ambassadors, Luís Figo for the men’s trophy and Nadine Kessler for the women’s trophy choose ten players in descending order from a list of thirty nominees.

Each of the ten chosen players receives 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point. The player with the highest number of points wins the Ballon d’Or. The amount of votes for first place separates the players in the event of a tie. They are divided by the number of votes for second place, third place, and so on if there is still a tie.

Does the winner take the award home?

Every year, a unique trophy is made for each of the current categories, and all winners keep their awards.

In principle, there are two Gerd Müller Trophies, five Kopa Trophies, five Yashin Trophies, five Women’s Ballon d’Or trophies, 69 official Ballon d’Or trophies, and two Socrates Awards in use globally. Additionally, each laureate has the right to request more official copies of their awards.

For display reasons, France Football also maintains two original Ballon d’Or trophies at its offices.
