Belgium vs Egypt: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Rudi Garcia’s Belgium eyes big win over seven-time African champions Egypt in Seattle.

Perched directly on the edge of the Puget Sound, the Seattle Stadium (Lumen Field) in Washington, USA, gears up to host the opening match week fixture in Group G of the FIFA World Cup 2026, featuring European heavyweights Belgium and African powerhouse Egypt.

Belgium are the favourite to top Group G, and the game against Egypt is set to be the deciding clash. The Red Devils boast of some of the elite players in modern football, including the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Jeremy Doku and Leandro Trossard.

They are led by French gaffer Rudi Garcia, who has previously been at the helm of Al Nassr, Napoli and Lyon. After winning the bronze in the 2018 edition, they suffered a humiliating group stage exit after scoring just once in the last World Cup.

Egypt are coming after that heartbreaking AFCON semi-final defeat, and they are still in search of their first-ever win in the World Cup. The seven-time African champions have historically dominated this fixture, winning thrice in the last four games against Belgium.

They also have some exciting talents, including Trezeguet, Omar Marmoush and captain Salah, who will be raring to go all guns blazing against the European heavyweights.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Sweden’s star-studded attacking lineup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of Tunisia, or will the African nation pull one of the biggest upsets against Sweden in the opener? We shall find that out soon.

5. Thibaut Courtois vs. Mohamed El Shenawy

Unarguably, one of the best goalkeepers in world football, Thibaut Courtois, is coming after a decent season with Real Madrid in a rare back-to-back trophyless season. Under Garcia, there are no management rifts, and he remains fully devoted to helping Belgium keep clean sheets in the World Cup.

The 37-year-old veteran Egyptian custodian is coming off winning the Egyptian Super Cup with Al Ahly SC, defeating fierce Cairo rivals Zamalek SC 2-0 in the final. His quick reflexes will be key against a star-studded Belgian attacking lineup.

4. Jeremy Doku vs. Ahmed Fatouh

The Belgian winger terrorised defences this season in the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. He is explosive, and his raw, terrifying pace and acceleration make him difficult to mark. He is excellent in isolating defenders to create a lot of scoring opportunities.

Fatouh plays for Egyptian outfit Zamlek. He is brilliant in the wings and has decent recovery speed. However, to neutralise attacking threats from a world-class Doku won’t be an easy task for Fatouh, who hardly has any experience playing in European leagues.

3. Kevin De Bruyne vs. Hamdi Fathy

One of the best midfielders to ever play this game, Kevin De Bruyne, is ageing like a fine wine. After he departed the Etihad, many doubted his fitness and form. But he silenced his critics after a brilliant season with Napoli in the Serie A.

Fathy plays for Qatari outfit Al Wakrah and has been a model of physical resilience. He will try to make this battle highly physical and combative, but De Bruyne’s elite creativity will make it even more difficult for Fathy in the central third.

2. Maxim De Cuyper vs Mohamed Salah

It will be a battle of youth flair and experience. De Cuyper had a decent season with Brighton in the EPL, and he may be the perfect solution for Belgium’s left-wing chaos. But containing a highly experienced and elite player like Salah would be a nightmare for De Cuyper.

If Salah remains fit, he gets going, and there’s no question stopping him. But there are doubts over his fitness after picking up a hamstring injury late in the season. It will be an interesting battle and Salah would be keen to make the upcoming World Cup memorable for Egypt.

1. Amadou Onana vs Omar Marmoush

This is set to be one of the highly anticipated plater battle of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Two of the brightest English Premier League players will be up against each other. Onana is coming after winning the Europa League with Aston Villa and is a solid defensive presence in the midfield.

Marmoush, on the other hand, is coming after a spectacular season with Manchester City. His high-profile switch from Eintracht Frankfurt saw him quickly adapting to the EPL’s high-intensity games. Keep an eye on two of the finest talents in the match as they rub shoulders with each other in Washington.
