Top five best footballers from Austria in the world currently
David Alaba is leading the pack
Ralf Rangnick has worked wonders for the Austrian National team since he took over, transforming them into a rigid side who are hard to break down. His teams are known for their counter-pressing and high defensive line, which effectively traps opposing players offside.
Under his guidance, players like Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer have flourished, showing great determination and hunger to perform for the national team. Austria have demonstrated in recent years that they can compete with any team, thanks to these emerging players.
Let’s now look at the players who could make a real difference for Austria in the future:
5. Stefan Posch
Bologna will be playing in the Champions League next season thanks to Stefan Posch’s exploits at the back for the team. He has been described as a modern-day defender by Thiago Motta after seeing him closely during the season.
The way he makes progression with the ball, a big passing range and is also good in winning duels with players. Posch is also not afraid to step up from the defence and join in attacks. He perfectly fits in Rangnick’s style as he wants the fullbacks to cover the width by joining in attacks.
4. Maximilian Wöber
The former Red Bull Salzburg has seen transformation under Rangnick who wants him to be a leader of the backline after having a successful season for Borussia Monchengladbach this campaign who signed him on loan from Leeds United after their relegation to the Championship prompted him to a new challenge elsewhere.
At 26 years old, he is in his peak years and will likely play a prominent role for them. Wöber has excellent positional sense as he can cover a good amount of ground due to his athleticism and never-die attitude.

3. Konrad Laimer
Konrad Laimer was one of the standout players under Thomas Tuchel at Bayern during the 2023-24 season as he fit in perfectly to his plans. His versatility proved to be a huge boost for the team as he covered several positions during the season after injuries ruled out many key players.
Laimer is known for his stamina and awareness as he senses the danger beforehand. Rangnick favours him mostly in the top end of the pitch due to his ability to cover a huge amount of ground for the team. He is well suited to Rangnick’s counter-pressing approach after playing under him at RB Leipzig.
2. Marcel Sabitzer
The Dortmund man has rediscovered his brilliant form at the right time as he helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final which they eventually lost to Real Madrid despite coming close to winning it.
Sabitzer mainly operates as a free man in the midfield who drives forward with the ball to take the team excellently in the attacking phase. He is good at disrupting the play by making crucial interventions and timely tackles. Rangnick has a huge expectation of him after developing into a key player under him.
1. David Alaba
Not many players have the chance to play for some of the best teams in the world. David Alaba is probably one of the few players who has won every trophy in club football for both Bayern Madrid and Real Madrid. Alaba started his journey with Bayern Munich after he broke through as a teenager who was destined to reach the top.
He has an excellent passing range as he can break the opposition’s line with his exquisite passing. Alaba probably has a season to forget after which has ruled him out for most of the season. In November, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury against Villarreal to limp off the pitch.
