It’s not enough for the modern goalkeepers to be good with their gloves. These days, shot-stoppers are expected to start the attacking moves as well as shutting them down. It’s fair to say you have to be as good with your hands as you are with your feet to cut it between the sticks these days. It has become one of the most scrutinised roles on the pitch and top stoppers now fetch huge transfer fees in the market. Agility and reflexes are par for the course, but the best goalies in the world also fuse a sense of confidence and daring in their penalty areas that make them seem truly larger than life.

10. Unai Simon

One of the lower-profile names on this list. he is a reliable shot-stopper and cultured operator in possession who doesn’t concede many in LaLiga. He has been Spain’s first choice for the past four years and enjoyed a personal best season in 2023-24. he conceded just four goals in the Euro 2024 as Spain won the European Championship. Simon also helped Bilbao to win their first Copa Del Rey in 40 years and also clinched the Zamora trophy.

Yann Sommer’s move to Inter didn’t really raise many eyebrows, because it was Andre Onana’s sale to Manchester United that grabbed the headlines. The Italian is a key player for Atalanta as he is able to make some brilliant saves to help his team. Gasperini is a huge fan of the shot-stopper as he always gives his best on the pitch. Carnesecchi has played Italian youth teams and left a very good impression. Atalanta‘s defence is one of the best in Serie A and a lot of credit goes to Carnesecchi.

7. Gregor Kobel

The Dortmund star has cat-like reflexes, having honed his skills during previous stints with Augsburg and Stuttgart, and played a pivotal role in his club’s run to the 2023-24 Champions League final. He is probably one of the best in the Bundesliga and soon he can replace Sommer as Switzerland’s number-one goalkeeper.

David Raya turned himself into one of the Premier League’s top shot-stoppers and his role as a playmaker at the back led Arsenal to sign him from Brentford. Raya’s influence has grown such that Arsenal’s entire goalkeeping department has been restructured around his strengths. The Spaniard’s cross-claiming is immaculate, his distribution is excellent and recently, his stop-stopping has risen another level. He is a key player for the Gunners and is one of the best in the world.

5. Thibaut Courtois

Courtois had to fight back from a long lay-off with a cruciate ligament injury. He returned to action for Real Madrid in May, but he does not look to have lost a step whatsoever. He did not concede a single goal in his five appearances at the end of the last season, including a shutout in their Champions League final win over Borussia Dortmund. The Belgian has fallen out with national team coach Domenico Tedesco, but as of now, his international career is on hold for now.

4. Alisson Becker

Alisson is a complete package. His distribution is top-class, nobody is better when it comes to facing down a forward-winning one-on-one, and he can make crucial saves in the biggest games. A two-time Premier League Golden Glove and Yashin Trophy winner, Alisson’s CV is littered with success. His future might be uncertain, with Mamardashvili set to arrive at Anfield next season as things stand. But still the Brazilian is good enough to help his team to get good results.

A late bloomer in that he has just won his first major championship at 34. Hradecky was an integral part of Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal wins in 2023-24. While he was less in the limelight than other players, he has his fair share of outstanding performances. Even though Leverkusen remained unbeaten throughout the Bundesliga season, there were moments in which the defence looked shaky and Hradecky needed to make monster saves to prevent defeat.
