Dortmund will host Leverkusen in the Bundesliga clash during the evening.

Borussia Dortmund will host defending champions Bayer Leverkusen at Signal Iduna Park on Friday in the first Bundesliga match since the league’s winter vacation ended.

Leverkusen are in the second spot with 32 points, four points below leaders Bayern Munich, whilst the Black and Yellows are sixth in the table with 25 points from 15 games. On December 22, they defeated Wolfsburg 3-1 in their final game before the break.

Given that Dortmund have only won one of their past five games, drawn three, and lost one, manager Nuri Sahin was relieved to have the winter break.

In addition to being the joint sixth-best offensive team in the Bundesliga with 28 goals, Dortmund are on course to have the most goals in the top division since they finished seventh in 2014–15 with 47 goals.

With 22 goals allowed, which is the eighth-best defensive return, and only three clean sheets in 15 league games, the Black and Yellows’ rearguard performance is dismal.

Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, enter Friday’s meeting having won 5-1 over Freiburg on December 21, a game in which Patrik Schick scored four goals.

Given that Xabi Alonso’s team had already lost six league games this season—more than they had in their whole 2023–24 campaign—some believed they had lost the title battle.

Leverkusen, however, have taken advantage of Bayern Munich’s four-point loss in their last four league games to win each of their last five Bundesliga games as well as winning their last eight matches across all competitions.
