Alphonso Davies was called up for the Canada March international matches
Alphonso Davies was selected in Canada’s team for a crucial CONCACAF Nations League playoff match against Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday. Davies is still recuperating from an injury to the face and a ligament injury that restricted his time on the pitch at Bayern Munich.
If Canada defeats Trinidad and Tobago on March 23 in Frisco, Texas, to go to the Copa America for the very first time, Davies’s full fitness may be crucial.
The victor will receive a spot in Group A, which will include top-ranked World Cup champions Chile, Peru, and Argentina, for the competition that takes place from June 20 to July 14.
Having 22 of the 23 players on the list being under 30, interim national team head coach Mauro Biello’s team has the youngest group formed since 2019.
“When I look at the roster there is a lot of players in good form and doing well at their clubs,” said Biello. “I’m really excited about the selection there’s players that will be hungry.”
“I want players that are hungry, coming in with that attitude of representing this country. For me it is about reigniting that passion and bringing in players that are in form.”
The 23-year-old Davies, who suffered an MCL strain five weeks ago, was forced to leave the game against Mainz after just 15 minutes due to a boot to the face, which required him to visit the dentist for repairs.
The most senior player in the team, Jonathan Osorio, a 31-year-old midfielder for Toronto FC, has the most international caps. Jonathan David of Lille, who currently sits second in Ligue 1 goals following Kylian Mbappe of Paris St. Germain, will spearhead the Canadian attack.
