Cape Verde made their FIFA World Cup debut in the 0-0 draw against Spain.

Cape Verde, the third-smallest nation by population to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026, has garnered the support of away fans. This follows their performance in their tournament opener against European champions Spain.

Tubarões Azuis scripted history by securing their first point in their first-ever FIFA World Cup game. They held the 2010 champions, Spain, to a goalless draw at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia.

Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated the game in possession, took seven shots on target and created more chances. However, Vozinha’s exquisite performance with the gloves was nothing short of a spectacle.

Cape Verde’s disciplined defensive approach, powered by the centre-back duo of Diney Borges and Roberto Pico Lopes, prevented the Spanish attack from breaking the deadlock. With the draw, Tubarões Azuis are still in the race to reach the knockout stage of the summer competition.

Cape Verde are drawn in Group H, alongside Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. They have already passed the test against La Roja with flying colours.

Now it’s time to lock horns against two-time champions Uruguay. Marcelo Bielsa’s side drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia.

Tubarões Azuis are expected to continue playing with the same set of players that featured against Spain. The whole side is fit and would be keen on showing their prowess again against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay.

Vozinha will keep the gloves, while centre-backs Diney Borges and Pico Lopes will be ready to guard the goals by pulling off dramatic blocks and interceptions. Kevin Pina will be a key player in the midfield, tasked with screening Uruguay’s back four.

Additionally, Jovane Cabral and Jamiro Monteiro are likely to play behind Dailon Livramento in attack as Cape Verde seek their first World Cup goal.
