Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia will face each other for the first time in the FIFA World Cup.
Cape Verde’s run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been nothing less than magical. They qualified for the global tournament for the first time in their history and faced 2010 champions Spain in their opening clash.
However, reluctant to step down, they put up tough competition against La Roja and secured a goalless draw, courtesy of their disciplined defensive approach. Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha put up a spectacle; he made seven saves against one of the top favourites for the World Cup title.
In the second game, they faced two-time champions Uruguay, who were seen as the dark horses under Marcelo Bielsa. Nevertheless, they forced La Celeste to settle for a 2-2 draw. Kevin Pina became the side’s first goalscorer in the tournament’s history, while Hello Varela also netted one.
The Blue Sharks are just one step away from securing a position in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup. In their last group-stage game, they will face Saudi Arabia, who have accumulated one point in two games.
If they defeat Saudi Arabia, they will secure a berth in the last 32. However, if they draw, they would have to wait until the last group-stage game, but they would still be likely to advance.
