Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Debutants Cape Verde are just one win away from clinching a historic knockout berth.

Houston Stadium in the United States of America gears up to host the final matchweek fixtures of Group H in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where Asian giants Saudi Arabia and debutants Cape Verde lock horns in what promises to be a thrilling contest.

Cape Verde shocked the footballing world after holding two former world champions, Uruguay and Spain, to a draw. They are on the verge of a historic qualification in their World Cup debut. A win in the next game would make them serious contenders for the top two and even a draw with a non-negative goal difference might still suffice to finish as one of the best third-ranked teams.

The Green Falcons started the tournament well, holding Uruguay to a 1-1 draw. But the Arabian outfit succumbed to a 4-0 defeat against the La Rojas in the last game. They need to win the next game and hope Uruguay does not beat Spain to seal a qualification berth.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Saudi’s offensive setup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of Cape Verde, or will the debutants get the better of the Green Falcons? We shall find that out soon.

5. Vozinha vs Mohammed Al Owais

The most capped goalkeeper in Cape Verdean football history and a national icon, Vozinha’s brilliance saw Cape Verde holding Spain to a goalless draw. Even at 40, the Chaves goalkeeper’s reflexes are agile and quick. He has now become a nightmare for opposition strikers to beat.

The Al Ula custodian has already conceded five goals in two games and is coming after a 4-0 thrashing against Spain. Al Owais will aim to keep his distribution rapid before Cape Verde’s low defensive block gets in shape and structure.

4. Steven Moreira vs Salem Al-Dawsari

Moreira has extensive experience playing in the USA with the Columbus Crew and also won the MLS previously. He has previously represented France youth teams before pledging his allegiance to Cape Verde. He will aim to give no space and time for Al Dawsari to move and cut inwards.

The Al Hilal legend and captain of Saudi Arabia will be keen to go all guns blazing from the wings in a must win clash. The former Villareal midfielder will use his world-class agility and direct horizontal cutting runs to shoot from his preferred right foot.

3. Firas Al-Buraikan vs Diney Borges

The most valuable player in Saudi Arabia squad, Buraikan is coming after a decent spell upfront with Al Ahli, with whom he also won the AFC Champions League Elite. He is yet to find a goal so far. He will act as the physical target upfront for Saudi Arabia and must score goals to keep Saudi alive in the World Cup.

Borges has a lot of experience playing in the Middle East and is aware of the physical strength of Saudi players. Honing his skills in academies in Portugal, Borges currently plays for Emirati outfit Al Bataeh. It won’t be easy to contain an elite striker like Al Buraikan, but Borges has shown his qualities against Spain.

2. Ali Lajami vs Gilson Benchimol

Ali Lajami is one of the few players to win silverware with both Saudi giants, Al Hilal and Al Nassr. Lajami would love to make heavy physical contact early to unbalance Benchimol. He will also step out from the defensive line early to challenge Benchimol.

Benchimol plays for Russian outfit Akron Togliatti. Having previously plied his trade with the Benfica reserves team, he has rubbed shoulders with some of the best players early in his career. In a highly physical battle, Benchimol will aim to win the duel by pinning Lajami physically.
