Top five clubs that could sign Youssouf Fofana this summer
Youssouf Fofana is one of the most well-rounded midfielders available on the market this summer.
With his club contract at AS Monaco expiring in 2025, Youssouf Fofana could definitely be on the move in this summer transfer window. A host of top clubs are interested in signing the French midfielder.
In the 2023-24 season, the 25-year-old midfielder made 35 appearances for Monaco across all competitions, registering four goals and four assists in the process. His world-class performances at the heart of the team guided the club to an incredible second-place finish in Ligue 1, securing UEFA Champions League football for the upcoming campaign. He also made three appearances during France’s semifinal run in Euro 2024.
Fofana has made it clear that he doesn’t want to extend his current contract at the club, forcing AS Monaco to sell their talented defensive midfielder for a cut-price deal this summer. With that said, here are the five clubs that could sign Youssouf Fofana this summer:
5. Atletico Madrid
Youssouf Fofana could prove to be a perfect fit in Diego Simeone’s defensive philosophy at Atletico Madrid that thrives on vicious counter-attacks. Fofana is known for his strength and ability to win tackles and regain possession in key areas of the pitch, making him one of the best ball-winning defensive midfielders.
In addition, the 25-year-old midfielder also possesses a solid passing range and physical presence in the box, making him a key contributor during the attacking build-up play. These incredible attributes make Youssouf Fofana an ideal midfielder in the Atletico Madrid system.
4. Borussia Dortmund
With the smart signings of Serhou Guirassy and Waldemar Anton from VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund have commenced their new era under coach Nuri Sahin on a positive front. The potential addition of Youssouf Fofana to their ageing midfield this summer would be another massive step in the right direction.
The 25-year-old midfielder would bring much-needed defensive stability to a team that has been leaking goals for fun in recent seasons. Along with that, Fofana’s incredible ability to seamlessly transition play from defence to attack could enable Dortmund to dominate games and potentially go on a title charge in the Bundesliga this upcoming season.
3. Arsenal
With his ability to dominate proceedings, both as a defensive midfielder and a central midfielder, Youssouf Fofana could serve as a perfect squad option for Arsenal as they look to challenge for multiple trophies in the upcoming season.
With Mikel Arteta preferring flexible midfielders in his system who can mould into multiple roles comfortably, Fofana could be the perfect option to recruit this summer. Youssouf Fofana’s footballing intelligence and versatility as a player enable him to consistently perform at a world-class level.
2. AC Milan
Italian giants AC Milan are also set to kick start their new era under coach Paulo Fonseca this summer. The Milan-based club are heavily interested in acquiring the services of Youssouf Fofana in the transfer window, as the French midfielder is available at a cut-price deal owing to his expiring contract.
AC Milan have already made initial contacts, both with AS Monaco and the player’s camp. The Milan hierarchy view Fofana as an ideal fit for their playing style since a well-rounded midfielder like him can deliver valuable output in both defence and attack.
1. Manchester United
Manchester United look like a serious force to reckon with this summer as they have already begun their club rebuild with flying colours through the mega signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.
However, one key position in which the club desperately needs reinforcement is in the midfield. Last season, due to the poor performances of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, the Red Devils consistently got outplayed in the centre of the pitch, resulting in an underwhelming campaign.
The signing of Youssouf Fofana should be a no-brainer for United, as at a bargain price they can get an incredible midfielder who can dominate proceedings with his incredible work ethic and defensive prowess.
With United already having the French midfielder as a part of their transfer shortlist, an eventual move could well and truly be on the cards this summer.
