Colombia vs DR Congo: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

La Tri remain favourites to top Group K after winning over White Wolves in the opening matchweek.

Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico gears up to host the Group K matchweek 2 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where South American giants Colombia and African powerhouse DR Congo lock horns in what promises to be a thrilling contest.

Colombia are coming after a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan, and the South American giants are one of the favourites to top Group K now. Nestor Lorenzo’s side was extremely clinical in attack, but the fullbacks made too many entries into the attacking third, leaving the centre-backs covering a lot of space in defence.

DR Congo are off to a historic start after holding favourites Portugal to a 1-1 draw in the opening game. A win in the next game would almost guarantee their knockout berth. After all, the majority of the players in their starting eleven play regularly in the top five leagues.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Colombia’s offensive setup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of DR Congo, or will the Leopards again pull one of the biggest upsets against La Tricolour? We shall find that out soon.

5. James Rodriguez vs Arthur Masuaku

James Rodriguez, the Colombian captain and a legendary icon in South American football, brings immense on-pitch experience. He is the creative heartbeat of Nestor Lorenzo’s side, who will look forward to finding and making entries into the pocket zones to make those dangerous diagonal passes with his left foot.

The RC Lens fullback boasts a strong tactical work rate, helping the team stay compact in a defensive block. He will try to stay as close to James Rodriguez as possible, physically crowding him and preventing him from turning onto his left foot to shoot or cross.

4. Edo Kayembe vs Daniel Munoz

Munoz loves to press higher and often leaves empty spaces. The Watford midfielder would aggressively push up front in the left channel to launch counterattacks. Kayembe is a shield for Congo, who is excellent at covering ground laterally.

Munoz is coming after winning the UEFA Conference League with Crystal Palace. He is Néstor Lorenzo’s primary weapon in creating wide overloads, and he even scored Colombia’s first goal at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Munoz’s overlapping and accelerated runs from the right flank will be key for Colombia.

3. Luis Suarez vs Axel Tuanzebe

With 46 goal contributions in 53 games for Sporting CP in his maiden season in the Portugal top flight, Suarez is coming after a brilliant domestic season. He will be keen to find his name in the scoresheet in the next game against Congo.

Tuanzebe, the Burnley defender, is a product of the Manchester United youth academy and represented England at the youth level. He is extremely disciplined defensively and will be tasked with keeping Suarez quiet in the next game.

2. Yoane Wissa vs Davinson Sanchez

Wissa scored Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal in the last game against Portugal. He played for Lorient and Brentford before making a high-profile move to Newcastle United last season. He is really difficult for central defenders to track, is highly physical, and is a clutch player for Congo.

Sanchez possesses world-class recovery speed, enabling Nestor Lorenzo to deploy a suffocating, high-pressure defensive press against opponents. He has won three Super Lig titles with Galatasaray. He was also part of the famous Spurs team that reached the 2019 UCL Final.

1. Luis Diaz vs Aaron Wan Bissaka

Luis Diaz has already found his name on the scoresheet against Uzbekistan in the last game and also netted an assist. He is coming after an extraordinary season for the Bavarians. He had a record-breaking 45 goal contributions in 51 games for Bayern this season.

Wan-Bissaka’s dominance saw Portugal fail to create many chances from the wings in the last game. He has played for top teams like Crystal Palace and won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford before finding his new home in the London Stadium.
